Default SWA Low Altitude Alert-TPA

ADS-B shows they got down to 150 feet, however this time weather may have played a major role. They went around and diverted to FLL.

I wouldn't necessarily put a lot of stock in ADS-B, the voice on the radio didn't sound like somebody who had just descended to 150 AGL several miles out in the middle of Tampa Bay.

With that said, guppy automation is not your friend.

They did get low enough to get an ATC alert, whatever that was. Looks like a wild ride from Flight Aware ADSB, if it was weather. Tape doesn't last long enough to see if they gave a Pirep about what they went through which must have been moving N since the previous landing SW had no qualms with their Pirep.

Not quite what the prior flight said. They reported moderate rain from 3 miles in and that the bad stuff was 5, 6 or 7 miles out whatever bad stuff means. I am not sure however what weather has to do with the low altitude unless they encountered severe down drafts which they did not report. If this was convective weather prior reports can be very wrong. Delta in DFW comes to mind. A Learjet just ahead reported a good ride. Delta encountered a downdraft so severe it drove the aircraft into the ground despite having lots of energy doing 180 knots.

Given the weather it's doubtful they were flying a visual. The latter 737's like the max have great displays for situational awareness. Better than the Airbus. They opted to divert to FLL after the approach at TPA.

While not excited, the latter crew response is truncated or clipped, and the decision to go around and then divert unequivocal and without hesitation. Minimums were there, but the crew clearly did not want to do that approach again.

If indeed they'd reached 150' seveeral miles from the runway, the controller might have been a bit more vocal and emphatic in his low altitude alert(s).

No windshear report on the limited, edited tape, except the controller's 10-knot loss report.

A ~1,000fpm descent starting at POLYV and busting the FAF minimum altitude by 1,000 feet, continuing down to 150 feet, not taking any apparent action until an ATC alert, does not point to windshear.

FAA has announced a comprehensive safety audit of SWA, citing too many recent incidents.

Saw a report that said with the altimeter setting, apparently how ADS-B might always be based on 29.92, the lowest altitude might have been closer to 370'. The investigation will provide the final answer. Regardless way to low.

Sounds like the old 'setting minimums while not in VNAV PTH' or getting out of VNAV PTH while the minimums are set. Seen it a couple of times and it's been perhaps the greatest risk to modern airline aviation for years.
