Many of my friends died in shoot-downs, suicides, CFIT, aircraft failing apart in flight, and automobile/motorcycle accidents. I never thought of getting high on illegal drugs, boarding an aircraft full of people, and trying to kill the engines on said aircraft because I was grieving.

That stated, I don’t think he should spend the rest of his life in jail. Lengthy probation including substance monitoring, expensive fines, and community service should suffice.
Yes, agree with all. While maybe Joe could actually get back to the point where he could fly, this isn't just about Joe. Society has to feel that justice was served and that the system worked, and that air travel is safe. No way is the toothpaste all going back in the tube on this one.

Also while it sucks for Joe, an example has to be set.
