I don't recall that he said "he wanted to kill everybody". I think he said he wanted to end what he thought was a bad dream.
Presumably he admitted to pulling the fire handles, but that was going to be hard to deny anyway with credible witnesses and the FDR.
But it sounds like he waived his right to council, that's usually not a good idea.

A flight attendant told responding officers that Emerson said he "tried to kill everybody," according to an FBI agent's affidavit, which was part of a criminal complaint filed Tuesday. -CBS news
Nonetheless, to even have that statement on official record isn’t good for those thinking murder charges are too extreme. Additionally, he did offer some pretty incriminating statements in his affidavit, especially waiving his right to representation as you point out, and saying he wouldn’t challenge whatever consequence would come of this. I can’t imagine those statements will help his cause of being released a free man. But what do I know… just another arm chair lawyer here.

You’re right, sounds like it was actually in one of the FBI agent’s affidavits quoting one of the FA’s saying he was trying to kill everybody…

A while back there was another incident on the east coast with a pax in the back.
The affidavits from the cabin crew were released, they were inconsistent.

Prosecution will not be able to turn this into Calloway 2.0, too much muddy water.

This is a link to a "Code Blue Cam" YouTube Video where police arrest a mall employee who has sold mushrooms to underage people. It's interesting in that the employee talks about his experience using mushrooms, including one time when he took way too much and had hallucinations:

So the guy tries to shut both engines down as well as force an exit door open in flight. But we're supposed to ignore that and focus on what MIGHT be a few seconds of clarity in his potentially deadly efforts to bring the aircraft down? YGBSM!!

YOU can think whatever you want. I'm just *speculating* on how the courts might approach it. I wouldn't get your blood pressure up just yet though, they might convict him on all 83 counts of attempted murder, with max consecutive sentences.

We don't know what it indicates, nor his mental process. We only know what he did. Moreover, he wasn't afraid enough of his mental state to give warning that he was about to pull the fire switches.
This wasn't just a line pilot , was he? Check airman or instructor?
