Hey Bud,
I get ya, but it seems like these shrooms are hit and miss. Don’t really know how to dose it or control them. On the B&G, that one post said a guy on shrooms was talking to his friends Black Mamba snake,, some crazy stuff.

From what I’ve read about them I fully support legalization. I also fully support adding them to the list of drugs we get tested for. They should be far away from a cockpit. But they have some promising potential in terms of various mental health issues when administered correctly by professionals.

This is too deranged of an event to cause any policy changes.

Maybe they will actually enforce background checks for CASS and so on (right now they aren't which is concerning. You can be in CASS and FDJ without ever having any background checks done). But that just means enforcing policies already in place.
Nah, he doesn't do a day behind bars.

It's already charged down to a count of flight crew interference.

Default Jumpseat Fitness to Fly

Where would you have rather this happened:
1. With this individual as a jumpseater where he was outnumbered two to one by guys who WEREN’T acting irrational?
2. With this individual as a CA with only an FO (or potentially only an FA with the FO on a potty break) to deal with his irrationality?

H€||, from a safety standpoint you coukd make a better argument for going back to a three pilot cockpit like back in the FE days than you could to ban jumpseaters, based on this event.
I think it is important to compare the likelihood that this pilot (or any future pilot for that matter) would have actually reported to work under the influence. I would argue that that most pilots consider their fit for duty self-analysis threshold to be a much lower bar when occupying the jumpseat than when occupying a pilot seat, notwithstanding the fact that a jumpseater is technically considered part of the flight crew. What may need to be re-evaluated as an industry is what the requirements for and proper scrutiny of jumpseaters should be. Should jumpseaters be subject to random drug and alcohol screening for instance? Should jumpseaters be required to prove that they have FAR 117 legal rest requirements? On this last point, I can certainly testify that I have pickup up many a jumpseater fresh off of a 10 hour trans-pacific flight who were more than happy to assume crew member responsibilities in order to expedite their commute home. I would be willing to bet that many of these same pilots would balk at any suggestion that their company be allowed to assign them an additional 2 or 3 hour segment at the conclusion of a trans-pacific flight for instance. Such an assignment would be considered unsafe. There seems to be some cognitive dissonance here.

That's the federal charge. Oregon has charged him with attempted murder.

That dog won't hunt. I can't imagine the Oregon state's attorney is excited to prove motive for attempted murder. Nevermind the jurisdictional issues. They'll defer to the feds.

LOL. Where do you go to law school? Since when do you have to prove motive? Dude took actions to kill 83ish people. Granted Oregon sucks and may coddle him but I’m pretty damn sure motive is not an issue.

He's already been arraigned for the state charges. It could still go away, but the state prosecutor doesn't seem to have an issue with it, and it doesn't seem that the defense has filed any motions over jurisdiction.

Oh, it’ll no doubt get argued down to reckless endangerment or something, but it’s not likely to altogether go away.

That’s a max of only a year in prison and 6250 fine. Of course with 80 counts, that’s going to add up and the jail time won’t necessarily run concurrently on each charge so with an aggressive judge, that woukd be 80 years and a half million dollars or so.
