QX2059 Jumpseater tries to shutdown engines

I didn't say discharging the bottles would have automatically crashed the plane. I was making a point that discharging the bottles would have been the next step, and who knows what he would have done (or tried to do during the ensuing struggle) after. Geeze.

Discharging bottles wouldn't have made any difference whatsoever. None.

Hope I don't get too technical, but in the E170/175, you can pull and twist the fire handles as much as you want, but none cause irreversible effects on the plane. Put the handles back, restart the engines (likely windmilling flying on the RAT at this point if things escalate too far), and bobs your uncle.
Without all the facts I am just speculating, but I think claiming the perp knew this is his best defense against the attempted murder charges.

So bad and life threatening, yet the FO has enough time to immediately restore the handles and the engines never shut down.
30 second struggle. At which point, how did he exit the flight deck? All indications seem to be he left himself and then told the FA he’s in a bad state and to please cuff himself. I see what the charging document says, but I don’t think we can truly envision how bad it was. Only the flight crew could tell you - and they won’t be talking publicly.

Do not discuss how to unlock the door from inside the cockpit here.
Do not.
The logistics, tactics, or strategy of subduing an attacker and removing that person from the cockpit are also not something to be covered here.

OK folks, we have the definitive coverage on this incident. None other than CNN's Nancy Grace has spoken. For 41 minutes no less. Hey, her husband has lots of pilots in his family so she knows this stuff.
She smells the pilot's breath when she boards a plane. I'm assuming she's flying private, because I don't think that would go over too well on an airline with pilots in the cockpit.

We don't know what the perp's mindset was, but the crew had to go Full Monty under the circumstances. So should anyone else in similar circumstances.
