The current pilot training model is broken, and the major airlines will have to go back to what they did in the 1960s...hiring pilots out of HS with a PPL, and paying for all of their training.
According to one of our posters, who has been very right about the Eagle/AA situation, AA has a long-term plan to work with a number of organizations to train pilots from 0-ATP..they work for AA...start at Envoy, and when they get the experience they need move to AA.
I think it will work similar to the MPL that is worldwide, but the US MPL will end in an ATP instead of just a Comm/Multi/Inst rating. Worldwide, many pilots are selected and trained by an airline...and they owe the airline "X" number of years of flying in return...just like the US military.

It hasnt already? Airlines are cutting routes, parking airplanes and bottom line returns lowered. It may only be at the entry level and it may indeed be a "shortage of people willing to work for x dollars" but it is still a shortage. It's getting worse every day and there is no end in sight. Something has to change and it has to change soon. This is not something that they can come up with a fix today and the problem gone tomorrow. It will take years and some "difficult" decisions but management folk to fix this.

Maybe a 10 year. I can assure you that they'll make it so they get their money's worth, and by 10 years, I mean spending 10 years where they need you, such as at the regional airline. The "contract" will hang the golden carrot of a guaranteed "slot" at the major airline...if everything goes right many years down the road. Although they hired out of HS before, now they have insurance requirements, stockholders and all sorts of regulatory agencies to appease. What worked "before" won't work now.

You need to stop and seriously ask yourself why you want to be an airline pilot. If it is to just fly airplanes then find a career that pays well and rent and/or buy when you get the bug. I cannot stress to you enough that an airline job will destroy the love of flying quicker than anything there is. Guys and gals don't care about flying when their lives are slowly dismantling around them. Pay is awful and being away from friends and family, especially on holidays will wreak your life and it will not get better or easier. It is not a good career choice any more.
I am 100% dead serious.
