Not sure where some of this stuff about Eagle is coming from..
I have never flown over 5 legs in one day at Eagle on the Saab or on the Jet in thousands of hours. Not once. Ever. I have NEVER even seen a line in the bid pack built with over 5 legs.
I have never had an airport standby reserve line for the month at Eagle. There is only 2 or 3 of those lines out of MANY reserve schedules every month and more senior reserves usually bid them intentionally (for commuting purposes or whatever reason). I have been called in from reserve to sit standby maybe 4 or 5 days in all my time here at over 3 different domiciles. Unless you happen to have extremely bad luck or extremely poor timing on getting hired this is a non issue.
Also, I have never been Junior manned involuntarily. They have tried a few times over the years, maybe once a year or so, it's not common. I never accept them as a commuter, and I never answer their phone calls on days off (why would you). I am "fatigued" at the end of a long trip and I go home. No questions asked. Ever. I have had flights cancel the last leg back to base on day 4 and had to return the next day due to weather or MX, but that happens at EVERY airline and is totally out of anyone's control.. and you still get the additional JM pay for the one leg back on a day off if that happens (3.7 hours pay, or 3.9 hours for a reserve)

But like you said the Saab and LA are gone so newhires don't have to worry about it.
I was the bottom guy in base for a year that meant a year of ready reserve. I lucked out a few months when guys forgot to bid and I got the PM ready line instead of the AM line. That got really old. I think I flew less than 100 hours that year. I can think of a handful of guys that were in that same situation when we furloughed after the Saabs left.

I agree with your last paragraph 100% but the first two I think you just lucked out. I've flown probably 50 6 leg days at eagle on the jet. They were built into at least three lines I can remember plus many 6 leg day trips on reserve. Easy flying FAT and SAN turns but not even worth 5 hours. This is off the Sept 07 bid pack: Sequences 17118-17126 each had a 6 leg day.

Sounds like you had bad luck with the reserve thing, with the timing of the furloughs and no new people coming in for a year or so.. Sorry to hear, I know the bottom handful of reserves, CA and FO really got screwed back when that happened. Hopefully that doesn't happen again any time soon.. My time in LAX on reserve was great. (Now that I think back on it, I would kill for that type of reserve now). We would just hang out at the beach and ride bikes back and forth to the employee parking lot and BBQ in the MX hanger.. I went through a stretch of never getting called for 30-40 days at a time. Of course when when we got in line for the Price is Right, they called.. and when we went to the Tonight Show.. they called. Lol.. figures, as long as I didn't make plans they never bothered me. I would love to go back to that reserve life, if it still existed. (except for the newbie paychecks). Those days are long gone though. I know reserve really sucks now, I've been back to it.

I would have to say you're very lucky! In my short time at Eagle I had several months of airport standby ready reserve (not by choice), plenty of 6 leg days on the jet, junior manned a few times, a displacement and a furlough.

There is not really any way to tell how long reserve will be for a new hire today. It changes constantly.. and it can be different from one class to the next depending on if they hire a bunch or slow/stop hiring. Some people are on reserve for 2-3 months, some people 2-3 years..
Kinda like what were talking about above. My experience was a lot different than some others just based off timing. When I was hired, within a year they hired nearly 500 people below me and there was a lot of movement at the time making reserve short. My QOL and upgrade time is a lot different than some of my friends hired just 8 months later. You just never know.. As of not too long ago, they furloughed and stopped hiring for a while, those people on the bottom have gotten stuck there for a couple years with no new hires coming in, this is why the reserve time for some people was really high.. currently they are hiring and things are starting to move again, so the time frame will come back down again for a new hire.. it varies by base as well, some bases are a lot more senior than others..
As long as things are moving and people are being hired, you won't be on reserve for 2 years.. If hiring stops or slows significantly.. you might be on reserve a longer period of time. I know everyone wants an answer to this question but it's impossible to give one. Key thing is to get in at the front of a big hiring wave, not the back end.. which is not easy to predict in a volatile industry. It's a gamble anywhere you go. Things change rapidly in this industry.
As a "guess" for a new hire if the flowthroughs are going and we continue hiring, like planned.. I would say expect reserve time of 4-8 months in a junior base like MIA.. (if something bad happens again, all bets are off)
