Or...the mediator could park you indefinately to get people to wake up and act sensible...
Or...the mediator could say you are too far apart, end mediation and put you back to direct bargaining...starting the process all over again...
There are more pieces and nuances, but it isn't worth getting into all that.
Bottom line...all the yakking about strike, release and other things is just that...yakking. The NMB doesn't give a rip about playing favorites with management or labor...they want the deal done. They don't suffer fools well and have very creative ways of making the point.

Umm...did you read the original post before posting that? The mediator just ended mediation. That's the whole point of this thread.

That's my question. Did mediation end, or just take an extended break? The "article" doesnt really say. My guess is that the teamsters would refuse arbitration. This company is soooo overdue for a strike.
