But, what about the guy who isn't where he reported where he is? What about the aircraft the controller forgot/ doesn't know about? What about the aircraft on the other tower frequency?

The biggest reason to turn them on is for the things you don't know about.

Clearly you're an inferior pilot if these unknowns bother you. The people who have perfect situational awareness, and who work in an environment where nobody ever makes a mistake don't need any bloody strobes.

*sarcasm* in case anybody missed it.

Incidentally, I've never been bothered by anti-collision lights in IMC. Maybe it's something that affects each of us to different degrees. When I'm in IMC, I'm looking at the instruments, so I'm missing the light show outside anyway.

Come on captain wonderful, tell me where you draw the line between compliance and non?

Get over yourself. You think you're doing everyone a favor, and your not.
what would you say when you called the CP?

How did you pass your eye exam for your medical without your peripheral vision?? You go to one of those 5 min in and out AME establishments? Jk :P

Or do you fly a heavy where the strobes are wayyyy back there?

For the record, there are only OFF/ON positions for the strobes on the offending aircraft.

The Airbus and MD-80 are the only 2 aircraft I've heard of with auto strobes.

How bout not staring at the strobes if it bothers you????? or if you thing they might be turning them on as they take the runway, look away! you don't have to watch them position and hold. My strobes are always on when I take the runway for this very reason, or of someone decides to pull in from of me while I'm doing 130 kts down the runway...that little flash of light might be all that saves the day.

Well we have a parrot on here! Isn't that all pretty obvious? Of course the MAIN reason was controller error. But as mooney said, even the NTSB said the case may have turned out for the better had they seen a strobe on the runway, vs just a tail nav light that blended in with the centerline lights. So I guess you think we don't need tcas turned on either since midairs are mainly controller error?
