Brief flashes from high-intensity strobe lights have been shown to have little effect on night vision. This is because the pulses of energy are of such short duration (milliseconds). Durations of bright light lasting one second or longer, however, can seriously impair night vision.

tell that to the 737 crew or Skywest crew who got landed on by 737 at LAX killing dozens because the controller screwed up and cleared them to land when Skywest was on the runway. Had the 737 seen the strobes of the aircraft on the runway they may have gone around. I believe that is straight out of the NTSB report. How bout not staring at the strobes if it bothers you????? or if you thing they might be turning them on as they take the runway, look away! you don't have to watch them position and hold. My strobes are always on when I take the runway for this very reason, or of someone decides to pull in from of me while I'm doing 130 kts down the runway...that little flash of light might be all that saves the day.

I love the strobe nazis that key up the mic and say "strobes" at high noon when you can barely even tell that they're on.

But you are correct I can certainly imagine someone pulling onto the runway while you are on the roll, missing the millions of candlepower of landing/taxi lights, but somehow picking up on a tiny flash while looking into the landing lights.
I hope you drive your car with the emg. flashers on as well, safety first you know. Perhaps you should always use your high beams as well, just to make sure everyone notices you.

That's good don't worry about the placard not to use in the vicinity of other aircraft. Although if there is not a cockpit 50 feet from the strobes, I have no issue. I hope you use the ice lights as well, because the guy behind you holding short certainly wouldn't see you and might taxi straight into you as you are in position. and besides who cares if he cant see a thing outside for 10 minutes, you got to be really cool turning on unnecessary lights.

p.s. if it's such a "tiny flash" why are your panties all in a wad over it? Maybe we should take off without those millions of candlepower landing lights, because those can blind people on parallel taxiways farther down too!

I like it better when the beacon is MEL'd so u have to use ur strobes prior to engine start. All the other planes chime in, when in fact your in the right.

An Israeli aircraft I flew did not have separate switches for the beacon and the strobes, it was either all or nothing and no beacon is not an option.
We caught a lot of grief taxiing around with our strobes on and felt like jerks the whole time. Hopefully Gulfstream fixed that problem when they bought the aircraft type.
The largest DEN based airline used to stress me out no end with all their lights on the runway, but then I did as mooney suggested and stopped staring at them.... I don't know why it took me so long to figure that out....
