Default Republic First Year Pay Questions

I know the pay rates and min guarantee are posted and I do have an idea. Nevertheless, what can a new-hire realistically expect for take-home pay and per diem during the first year?

How much overtime is available to a new-hire? Can you work as much as you want?

BTW;
I've been to the rahcontractnow.com
I've read the threads about a potential strike (no, I wouldn't scab)
I've read all of the other posts about what's bad about working at RAH.

Anyway, just a couple of simple questions about 1st year pay.

As far as how much overtime is available and working as much as you want depends on if you are on RSV the entire time. If you are, dont count on breaking min credit for the month. Its possible, but its all luck of the draw. Also with very few days off, I would imagine scheduling department would rather not have you pick up overtime to prevent you from exceeding any flight time limitations within your assigned reserve stretch. This of course will not stand true if they are incredibly desperate to get a flight out and you are willing to fly it. Hope this gives some sort of insight.

To attempt to answer your question, I'd guess around $25k first year including per diem. Should go up whenever we get this damn contract hammered out, but don't count on that. Amount of flying depends on the cert/base. I was hired in 2007 onto the Republic cert and haven't spent a day on reserve yet. It's a crap shoot.

Do your research...again and again.

I was a first year first officer at Chautauqua last year. Most of the year I was a bottom line holder at MKE. I averaged between 75-80 credit hours per month. I just looked at my 2011 return and my average take home pay was $964 per month. That's after the deductions for uniforms, union fees, health insurance, taxes, 401K, etc. I did take a lot out for 401K, so maybe if you were an average guy your take home pay would be about $1100 per month. Hopefully you have a second income or a spouse that makes money!

FWIW
My first year pay at Eagle (including per diem) was right around $31,000. I was on reserve and only broke guarantee three months. Heck one month I hardly flew at all. With per diem it was $20,400. Most of per diem is not taxable so my after tax pay was around $29,000.

I didn't count per diem in my figures. I don't know about other guys, but all of my per diem was spent on food while working and the cost for gas, hotels, etc. that you'll need to spend for this job. To count per diem like it's income seems silly to me.

Also, I would add that although I was lucky enough to be a line holder most of my first year, they closed down my base, displaced me, and I am now on reserve far from home. That's RAH's (and most regional's) modus operendi. To be safe I would only count on making 75 hours credit per month for a long time. I would also budget for many moves and commutting. If you're paying for hotel rooms that will really add up. A few years ago I sat ready reserve at a different airline and almost my entire take home check was eaten up by commutting and hotels.

Why is counting per diem silly? Any other person with any other job spends part of their paycheck on food, gas, etc. It doesn't make that portion of their income irrelevant.

Wow, 25k... I think I was just under 20 in my first year at RAH. Thats the difference between RSV & holding a line I guess. At least now we're in the 36.62 club with no worries
