@OCCP, acknowledged. He was a max day off guy, but he made hay when the sun was shining.
I was, however, trying to illustrate that the potential to make well beyond guarantee may exist in this guy's situation. If he can get his wife past the first year or two, he might have a real shot at interim happiness.
I remember having poverty talks with my significant other. There is no way around it; being an airline pilot looks like a lousy bet from a wife's point of view, particularly from the bottom rung. It's humiliating, emasculating--it sucks.
But jumping... to Republic, of all places! A huge gamble. Might work out.

Things to consider when Republic looks so awesome:
- No cancellation pay
- 75% deadhad pay
- No daily min guarantee (unless you are on reserve)
- No Zed fares come Apr 1st.. (you want to go back to UK once in a while don't you)
Soft money wise XJT is better

Thanks buddy, appreciate the support. If I can convince the wife that the majors will happen sooner rather than later, then things might be a different story. I'm heading to the Fltops.com job fair next month to try and find out where I stand with the majors at the moment, so fingers crossed.

Wait a minute! You are trying to sell this 'I will be in majors in two years' idea to wife? Buddy, you might be setting up yourself to a rude awakening .. If you think you will be in majors soon, think again or get out of the industry.. Keep things honest with wife.. if there is one thing you want to do , is to keep wife well informed and happy
I should also say, I've flown for what might be considered 'the majors' back in the UK, and it isn't all it's cracked up to be. Aircraft size etc doesn't come into this. QOL and long term stability are my two main motivations. I worry about the 50 seat market shrinking and where XJT will find itself in 5 - 10 years time. Although I hate to put Republic and GoJet in the same sentence, the future is probably with companies like these, with 70+ seat aircraft. If this was an XJT vs GoJet thread though, it wouldn't even be worth considering.
I won't share the personal reasons behind all of this on here other than to say that my wife needs to be more of a support to her family now and there are a lot of very personal and very complex reasons behind even considering this move. I appreciate that it is hard to give a frank opinion on this without knowing my full situation, but in essence only I can decide regarding the personal aspects. I'm mainly interested in Republic vs XJT as a big picture. The lack of ID90s and cancellation pay are both major factors, so thanks for sharing those.
I'm also interested to know how easy it is to transfer between certificates, say from Republic to Shuttle?

Keep in mind, there is no guarantee you will get the 170/190 type rating either. While hiring is taking place you may be put on any of the three certificates including CHQ, with no chance to slide over as an fo. Take it from someone who has been on the certificate for almost 5 yrs. now, you don't want to roll the dice and risk still being on reserve while new hires on the heavy metal enjoy holding a solid line.

The guys in the hiring department also told me that I can turn down three classes before having to reapply, so that would suggest some flexibility regarding which certificate new hires would go on to now.

Stay with XJT and commute to wherever your wife wants to live. You already hold a relief line? I was on 3rd year pay (with a 17month furlough) before I held a relief line at XJT, so you honestly should consider yourself lucky... why abandon your seniority for all these gambles? People have already told you that the pay will be better at XJT, and they are correct. And you're very close to second year pay.
You think Republic will be better off with their 70 seaters in 5-10 years? Nobody knows what will happen. People have been saying the 30-50seat market has been going away for the past 5 years, and the planes are still operating. Not to mention that XJT doesn't own the planes anyway, they lease them... So with SKYW making decisions and funding the project, XJT has better potential for new airframes to suit a changing market than Republic does.
Anyway, you have 3 pages of people saying to stay at XJT... so not sure why I even bothered to chime in. Good luck.

My understanding is that the majority of hiring this year is going to be on to the Republic certificate. I'd personally prefer to go to Shuttle, but beggars can't be chosers. Out of interest how easy is it to change from one certificate to another?
The guys in the hiring department also told me that I can turn down three classes before having to reapply, so that would suggest some flexibility regarding which certificate new hires would go on to now.

Hiring people were saying 'you are going to upgrade in 2 years' to the people that were hired last fall .. then they got furloughed.. What do you make of this?
Is it a base you want that makes you want to work at Republic? Then most likely you are not going to get it.. Forget about DEN in RW , ORD in S5..
I also don't understand why you would like to skip 3 classes... Skipping one class could mean being furloughed vs. accepting the first one..
To me it looks like you are making a lot of assumptions that may not pan out and you are making a lot of mistakes.. then again, I am not your dad and it's your life..
