This saved a bunch of money for me in both crashpad fees and tolls.
Things may have changed some for reserve since then, but...
I rarely got a one day reserve assignment, so, once activated, it was unusual to go home for a couple days. So, I wasn't doing this, then flying, then doing it again the next day.
It may be that reserves are getting used to a level where this isn't as viable as it was in 2018 when I did it.
Of course, if you're planing on staying in DC once you get a line, it may be beneficial to have the pad and try to condense your schedule in one part of the month. Good Luck!

Hey much appreciate the responses. I am planning on driving there, again I’m about 3 hours away and would like to avoid having to worry about catching a flight home at the end of a rotation.
Being that I’m in this weird spot of being just too far and just close enough it’s tough deciding whether I need one and where lol.
but thank you!

Hey Zach, from the idea column...and assuming you're new as opposed to a capt upgrade...when I first started I ended up in LGA, it's about 2.5-3 from my place in traffic. A solid 2 in off times, and there's not a lot of that in NY! What I did was try to get 3 am reserve. I'd wake up and see if I had anything at 3 (it was unusual for this to happen), if not I'd take my time, get ready and at about 4:30 or 5 head out. I'd be about 45 minutes away from LGA by 7. I went to a rest stop on the NJ turnpike and read. At around 10 ish, I'd head for home. (they rarely called after 10, maybe once) and at 11 you're sort of released anyway, your rap ends at 1p and they have to give you 2 hours to get there....

The active and fit gym membership is good for this too. $25. A month for about 200 + gyms across the country. Most have showers too.
