Default Reserve

So probably a dumb question, but how does 'reserve' work coming out of training prior to holding a line?

After that, do you bid reserve while holding a line? Why would someone do/not do that?

Thanks!

Reserve is almost always not by choice. You can bid reserve anytime you want, but here, you don’t want it. There is no real advantage to bidding reserve on purpose at Republic due to the way we call reserves. If it was seniority based calling, then maybe, but CS tends to call whoever their finger lands on with very little explanation as to why. It’s supposed to be done a certain way via contract, but it’s tribal knowledge that they don’t really follow directions very well. Reserve is an unfortunate rite of passage...grin and bear it until you get lucky to get a line.

Yeah that system needs to be changed to seniority based next contract. Apparently it used to be seniority based in the past. You can reasonably “predict” if you’ll get called based on Flica and sometimes call scheduling out on it if you’re not next and sometimes win.

This is spot on, but, once you're on reserve for a while or a junior line holder, you can bid reserve and usually get any days off you want during that month (up to 12, other contractual obligations not withstanding, 6 work days in a row max etc.). I did this for a couple months that I needed blocks of 4 or 5 specific days off to do something fun. This way I didn't have to burn paid days off to get the days I needed.

You can also do this to take all (most) the weekends off once you have a little seniority on reserve. In my case, LGA, that was pretty much shortly after IOE. I had Thanksgiving and Christmas off my first year. YMMV
