These are the kind of posts on APC that really drive me crazy! Some people will find anything to complain about. Before anyone thinks I am defending Republic (Lord knows it will happen), I work in the corporate world at present, but am thinking of returning to the airlines.

These forums often help to paint a picture for those of us who are making career decisions. Posts like this one are not helping....

The company is paying for your ATP-CTP course for crying out loud! This is a requirement by the FAA that you would have to pay for, in order to meet the airline's hiring requirements in the first place. They are giving it to you so it counts as income, like winning on a game show or at a casino. Since you are not an employee yet, they have to show the expense to the IRS on a 1099. If the new tax laws that Trump introduced keep you from de ducting this, blame Trump, not the airline.

They tell you that it may have tax impacts, who cares when they tell you. You are getting something free and if you plan right, it shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry to rant, but come on people...we need to be realistic here and stop griping about stuff like this. Makes us look like children....anyone remember low pay, horrible scheduling and truly poor QOL...those of you who just started working for a regional in the last 5 years, don't know who good you have it!!

(Rant over)

To add on, it seems every new hire is getting a $17,500 signing bonus. Save some of it for the taxes if you aren’t able to itemize.

This just wreaks of kids who don’t understand how the world works.

Then why not 1099 new hires for their type ratings, too?

The FAA doesn’t determine when someone officially becomes an employee, the company does.

There was no withholding on this amount. So the IRS says "You owe us another $1250." (5000 x 25% tax bracket.) That's what's playing out?
I’ll admit I’m not read up on 1099 rules, but what regional new hire is in the 25% tax bracket? Maybe if you were hired in January you could get there with the bonuses, but otherwise that’d be a tough bracket to reach.

The IRS withholds 25%, but it comes out in the wash when your total income is assessed and some of it comes back to you. This has been discussed ad nauseam regarding signing bonuses.

That was kind of my point. When all is said and done you’re paying about $1000 for something that would cost you $5000 if done out of pocket. Not really a bad deal.

Actually, even if you did not receive a 1099, you should report it as income voluntarily because it is an economic gain to you. If you sell bananas on the side of the road and are paid in apples, you are still obtaining income and must report it to the IRS.

As for issuing a 1099 for the type rating, I suppose this has to do with the threshold issue of whether the educational benefit is to obtain the minimum requirements to hold the job vs education to sustain the job. While the expenditure of type rating pilots fits better in the latter category, the atp is clearly in the former category.

I am scheduled to start soon. Do you guys talk to each other like this in person? Just curious.

My bad, used last year's rate. So 22%. It's a taxable fringe benefit.
