We're seeing 4-5 years from 0-ATP in the collegiate ranks. As mentioned before, the availability of financing and many cases, lack of dedication to training is slowing the eventual applicants. 2-2.5 years, possible? Sure. But at least 4-5 more likely. Our instructors fly 70-80 hours at month with reduced mins once they get their CFI but that's taking a while.

I just think classes of 100 at skywest or 30-50 at most the regionals month after month is not consistent with the notion of a labor "shortage". It's a marketing tactic by the industry in collusion with the media to ensure a steady supply. While the pool may more limited than in generations past, it seems to me it is by no means drying up. Maybe my opinion will change when I get to 121 and see for myself.or Maybe 80 a month at skywest for several years is just a drop in the bucket? I think 40k was the threshold for new cfi and part 135 entrants , bucketlisters and people returning to the industry.

Seems to be majors hiring ramps up, attrition ramps up and then we get all crazy about a shortage of regional pilots but that ramps up and they come out of the woodwork. The RAA presentation I saw did say only 60 percent of hiring goals were met, so I could be way off kilter, or they could be fudging numbers to further the case of repealing the 1500hr rule.

I was sugessting mention of.the word "shortage" is highly charged and does not serve the piloting profession so to speak
Nailed it.

Certainly the case with me; wasn't interested when they were paying $23K/year...

The pilot supply and demand is global. Looking at it from only a US perspective does not give the true picture.

China has been raising pay since 2008. The shortage there is now MUCH worse now than it was then.

Another problem with training more US pilots. MANY of the training slots available in the US are occupied by non-US pilots...those slots are not available to train US airline pilots.

I'm not saying you're incorrect, but aren't the Chinese still asking for 500 hours IN TYPE? seems like they are only short Captains who are likely to already be at their career airline here in the US. They're gonna have to change that **** if they wanna recruit any substantial numbers.

I know plenty of Emirates pilots (myself included) ready to take a job at the regionals - some already have. They're all highly experienced in international ops, weather, dealing with a diverse workforce, CRM - you name it. They all have (too) many flight hours and they're in their 30s, 40s and 50s yet they aren't even being looked at by the majors. There's no shortage of qualified pilots...

I don't know what you mean by "slots" but the entire infrastructure here has evaporated. The only thing that's left are the insanely (and completely unjustly) expensive collegiate programs. You know, 6 figures plus to learn in "all glass" (LMAFO!) trainers. These B-School idiots are still fiddling while it all burns down. That'll be great for us in the short term though.

That's odd. Friend of mine just went for recurrent. Instructor as well as seat support had a DL class date. The past 2/3 captains I flew with either had class dates or interviews with one of the big 3.

Nine months being at a 121 regional and only one captain was about to go to a legacy. Most of them are lifers, don't care enough to have apps in or simply are not motivated enough to make the jump.
