If you're just starting your career in aviation get a degree in something that will make a good backup. If you've already got your experience and ratings get a degree in aviation because it's the fastest way to finish. Most universities will give you a year's worth of credit for your ratings. If you get into a situation where you think you need a backup plan then consider adding a degree in a different field or an MBA. However, an aviation degree and graduating from an aviation university or a university with an aviation department add points to your app at DAL and UAL, and that could add you to the seniority list sooner.

I put off getting the degree hoping I wouldn't need, but finally buckled down and finished it and it is an accomplishment well with the effort for a multitude of reasons.

Just to set the record straight I don't have a college degree, when I started my aviation career. My lack of resources and new family and a unbelievable job offer and my young age and skills level made a college degree unnecessary. Don't think I wouldn't love to have one. But in all my years of flying.I haven't seen any difference in Flying ability, I really enjoy flying with well educated pilots. One of the best was a military pilot who was a history buff and also NATO staff member. It's always seemed funny to me that some airlines want 1000 hour but 4 year degree. Me I think a 121 4000 hour pilot that's been to every major airport in the USA would be a better all around pilot . So let the debate begin.

The debate's all ready taken place long ago. Guess who won.

Thru out my career, until a few years ago you had to be military pilot to get a job with any major airline. What I saw was all military hiring . FedEx UPS was OK at first , but then the the military boys took over. There are whole squadrons of pilots at the big three. And still now they would rather have a military pilot at just about any airline out there. They do a great job and deserve everything they get.But things are changing, my daughter may very well get a job with a major without a four year degree (let's hope) So to say the the debate is over is really uneducated.

The ratio between military and civilian pilots is much more even compared to pilots with a four year degree and those without one. Places like Fedex, UPS and the legacies were inevitably going to have to hire civilians with a bachelor's degree as the retirements kicked in. Applicants without a four year are going to have a very long wait.

Having a 4 year degree means that you are able to at least pick a book up, read it, discuss it and write an essay at a college level. All of these skills are in one way or another a requirement to be a professional pilot in the current environment.

Yeah, well....SHE has something working in HER favor, and maybe a degree won't outweigh that....
