I'm currently a Delta FA and the composite system is beautiful, vastly better than traditional reserve. I do two 3-day reserve periods every month, and typically 8-10 days of trips. Usually have plenty in open time to do trip trading and to preference for reserve. Very first bid award for me (December) was 80 hours credit and 15 days off.

Do you use pbs to bid?

Yes we do. Never used a line bid but overall no real complaints with PBS. I kinda like it. You set preferences, give each of them an importance (a point value), then the system puts together trips and reserve days to best meet your preferences. I'm at 83% in base usually get a decent schedule, and can frequently get off the days I want. Sometime you even get nice things that you don't expect. I held ewr-cdg on July 4.

Why is there any open time left over then?

You could possibly get contract language that x percent of trips/block hours must remain unassigned to be used for open time trades.

Don't know. Never asked. They probably have more trips than people to cover them, so some go to open time. Shouldn't say there's a huge amount in open time but usually enough that I can swap out things that I hate. I did 2 swaps for next month: swapped 2 LGA-PBI turns for a 2 day trip, then swapped that for a different 2 day trip. Of course you can also do direct swaps with other people or straight pickups on something they're trying to drop.

If there are more trips than people can cover, then does that mean you have very little amount of people on reserve?

We are somewhat short-staffed for the summer due to increased mainline flying. We're all getting 85-95 hour schedules and there's still a lot of stuff in open time (especially if you like Newark).
I'll have to talk to a bid assistant next time I see one about how stuff winds up in open time. You have me wondering now. There has to be some system to it.

I think they go the other way. They're more concerned with people on reserve and will ultimately use them to cover the open trips. And I think I phrased it wrong: a lot of trips relative to available staff. We still have more people than trips.
