Turbo Prop VS. Turbo Jets
Ok guys...I know that this topic has probably been done before but I figured why the hell not create anohter thread. Turbo Props VS. Jets...
Does one require more pilot skill than the other?
Do you think a 5 year RJ Captain is as "experienced" or "qualified" as a 5 year turbo prop Captain?
What about a 2 year RJ Captain VS. a 5 year T-Prop Captain?
How much longer do you think the T-Props will be around?
Do you think big time airlines will start requiring ONLY jet time and no turbo prop time?
Alright guys I am just looking to hear some opinions...Thanks!

The only thing in that area that I've flown is a Merlin. It's a fun plane and I had a pretty good learning curve on it. For some reason it was hard for me to stay ahead of. however it's the only t-prop I've flown so I can't speak on others.

sounds like airlines want pilots who can hand fly and ndb to mins.. And have the required pic time... The issue is the pic time not whether or not it was a jet or a t-prop.
They will teach you how to program the computer, they can't teach you to fly..
adios

Does one require more pilot skill than the other? I would be hard for one to measure such skills
Do you think a 5 year RJ Captain is as "experienced" or "qualified" as a 5 year turbo prop Captain? It depends on a lot of different factor. Company, geographics, type of airplane.
What about a 2 year RJ Captain VS. a 5 year T-Prop Captain? Cant measured. I think turboprop driver see and do things jet drivers cant and vice versa.
How much longer do you think the T-Props will be around? They will be around for a long time. Watch out for a wave of airlines ordering Q400 in the future. Total order this year so far is 65.
Do you think big time airlines will start requiring ONLY jet time and no turbo prop time? It could happen but i doubt it. Flyin a jet with the autopilot engaged at 400agl in an RJ is not all that difficult. I think prop drivers have a more challenging day. Now-a-days skills dont really matter much, its all about who you know!

Yea there is a trend to accept jet only or certain weight limits however these mins are very rare in the U.S. Most airlines do not care about tprop or jet time also most tprops are EFIS equipped anyways, all that's left to have is FMS experience but that can be easily learned. I think it all comes down to sacrifice. Many do not like the fact that they will have no life and money for the sake of getting that TPIC faster in a Tprop. Not to mention that Tprop flying is much more demanding, sometimes there are those severe days when you wonder how those guys do it. Others would rather have better qol, a quieter jet ride, and more money, so in exchange willing to accept longer upgrade times.

Yes when it comes to "meeting the mins" however when you have Airtran Recruiters telling Colgan CA's I flew with "You gotta get some Turbofan time to be competative..........." makes ya wonder! Do you think majors care if you flew 8 approaches a day? No, Glass time is helpful as well has FMS experience, lets face it Majors no longer hire pilots based on their qualifications, all who you know, just look at HOTMOMMAPILOT!
