Less rosy than the paper.
Yeah. Read it. Discussed it. They project a decline in 7% of jobs. That's 4000 jobs over 10 years yet the demand for pilots is expected to increase across the board by 9%. Those are just job additions and does not take into consideration that major airlines expect to retire tens of thousands of pilots in the next 15 years. Did you ever question where they got their numbers from? I did. If you go to APC, just in legacy pilots alone, there are 40,000 pilots. So, there are only 20,000 remaining pilots at major, LCC, regional, and cargo companies? Southwest Airlines, alone, has almost 10,000 pilots. An unexplained error that large makes me tend to discount anything else it has to say as pure conjecture.

The most prestigious job fairs are for organizations I am not a member of as a white male, and I think it's absolutely assanine how many white males go to those. Finally I'm a regional FO and I'm supposed to drop a few hundred just to hand someone my resume?

I do volunteer work where I live, I have a 4 year degree, and I update my apps weekly. My total time is nowhere near 12,000 and I wouldn't have been there for another 12 years at least. I checked all the boxes I could, including getting recommendations from a few guys at all the majors, to no avail. I gave it a shot, I would have liked to fly at a major just to see what it was like compared to a regional, but I guess it wasn't in the cards. Sorry for being bitter, I'm glad for my health and sanity I'm quitting this career.
I've been flying/training DAL new hires for months now. They all have been good to exceptionally good. They ranged from age 26 to mid 50's. Some had relatively little time and some had huge time. Most went to the job fairs and met DAL pilots there (who did meet and greets; gave out cards , and took resumes). Two females out of 15ish. 3 military. Maybe 3/4 flow throughs (or flow threws). The rest have been from various regionals. 2/3 were previous DAL employees. 1 or 2 previous intern experience. 2 children of DAL Captains. Many previous LCA's. Some had NO PIC time at the 121 level. Nobody has sucked and there have been a few that were incredibly good. FWIW

The fellow that flew in Viet Nam did not fly in the war--none of those guys are left (it's been almost 40 years since the fall of Saigon). He flew RJs for a Vietnamese airline.

I'm sorry you feel the way you do about the job fairs, but I can tell you from my experience, that it made a huge difference. I could go into details, but I'd bore (and probably depress) you.

The advice about making yourself "interesting" is also prudent--esp. if you get to spend time with a recruiter at a (wait for it) job fair.

Think of it this way: if the airline is taking applications from the resumes they collect at job fairs (and they all are), and you don't go, you're helping your buddies get one step closer to getting an interview. But if you go, you are one step closer to getting an interview than your friends that stay home.

I've gotta eat my words on the guy getting over 200 hours. We just had an A330 captain hit 217 hours of pay for August. That's a 53,000 dollar month.

I understand there's time and a half and occasionally double time, but how on earth would someone manage that?

Payback days and a couple of double time trips.

I'm already done with the industry, but I do understand the job fairs are necessary, I just wasn't going to waste the money and wait in lines for hours to have some recruiter look at my resume and say I didn't have enough time. I haven't had a fri-sun off in 2 years anyway so no matter what I couldn't have gone. If you get bored feel free to pm me the details you're talking about, I enjoy reading and would like to read what you have to say.

To the Delta trainer guy that's some good info, thanks for sharing.

I had back to back 150 hour month this year. It was the perfect storm and all the stars aligned just right. Can't imagine how one does 212, especially as a Capt?

Check out Denny Crane's posts on the L&G thread the last couple days. He explains how he pulled off that moonshot.
