The only "need" for regionals as they exist today was created by the majors "needing" to make a B/C scale happen somewhere after it failed in-house, and the idea was re-manufactured with the advent of 50-70 seat jets. If they can no longer source new employees at this level due to the sub-mainline pay/lifestyle/benefits/retirement/career path, then we will see where the "need" for B scale idea goes. BTW, it is going that way quickly.
I hope your correct and it goes away....but I am not convinced yet.

The problem is that airlines only market to entry level pilots....even the majors. The difference with the majors is people are willing to work for less because they know they can make more later. With the regionals it's always iffy.
If the majors implement a b scale after getting rid of regionals they will likely experience the same problem eventually.
There are plenty of experienced pilots out there that would be willing to fly for an airline if their pay was commensurate with their experience. If I were to leave my current high(er) paying job I would very unlikely bother to work for another airline.
The problem is in the supply of entry level pilots, not the supply of pilots. The regionals want to create more entry level pilots and ignore the rest. They feel they should not have to conform to market supply and demand. Their entire business model is based on short term goals so it's understandable they behave this way.
As a pilot group we allow this to happen and make it possible. In fact we encourage it...we just don't know how to undo it at this point.

The difference is that the garbage man has to work his a** off for that $60k. I don't really do much of anything that could be considered work for my $50k. I sit around until we're ready for pushback, have to work a little during taxi and takeoff, then sit around for a while, then have to do a little more work during landing, then sit some more. I do that four times and then go sit around at the hotel. Sometimes I read a book, sometimes I'm on my phone, sometimes I'm just staring off into space. I do that 13 or 14 days a month and I'm off the rest. Being a pilot is one of the laziest jobs out there. Go be a garbage man for a month if you don't believe me.
Being a garbage man, carpenter grave digger is honest work, but you can't see that because it's hard to check your Facebook status while driving a garbage truck.

No denying that there are many systemic problems within the airline industry today, and the paradigm is shifting albeit painfully. The current administration, the other side of the aisle are all complicit with corporate America to keep labor costs low. I think it is ironic that the very party that supposedly is on the side of the American "worker" is in the process today of selling out organized labor to lowest bidder...

Tell the Regional Airline Association how you feel; Contact Us | Take Flight Tomorrow They represent the industry you work in, are they representing you? Well, here is your chance to let 'em know. I still haven't gotten a reply back....I wasn't nasty, but I repudiated their version of events.

As pilots why would any one sign that???
Why if you are at 1500 hours would you want to do anything to reduce the bargaining power you are sooooooooo slowly getting?
I just saw the slide show - median salary 111K at regionals?
Really.
Need a counter campaign.
