Flying outside of the Regionals?
#21
Yeh, I don't know many regional guys who fly on the side...When I was still flying for a living, I NEVER took up a small plane on a recreational or for profit flight...not because I didn't like flying in small planes, I just didn't find the free time, and I wasn't willing to allocate the money (what little I had) towards it.
I've recently started instructing again and am enjoying it. I still wasn't willing to put much money towards recreational flying, so I find a job to do it on the side. I get the joy of instructing every week, and doing a bunch of sight seeing tours in a skyhawk.
It's a great way to spend the few days a week I get out of the office.

Recreational flying not a problem.
Flying for hire, eg. instructing, is a problem as any compensated flying counts towards your 30 in 7, 100/month and 1000/yr.
The first time you call your chief pilot to tell them you can't finish your 4 day trip due to a 30 in 7 problem because you instructed 7 hrs on your days off, well, you will be given a choice real quick. (And how are you going to fudge this in your logbook if you're doing it to "build time" a
s someone suggested?!)
Yes. Flight time/duty regs change in January. Will cause even more issues with required rest in 7 days.

Most people get 16 hours off per day + two days off on the weekends. Airline pilots don't have the luxury of being able to do their laundry and run errands after work each day. All I was saying with my post is that I realized that I need my two full days off that I get per week to catch up on things I couldn't do during the week. Instructing is pretty much out of the question until I'm senior.
Now if you could log a few hours in a 172 during your 18 hour layover in SDF that might be cool. At home, no freakin way!
