I think the best way is to place those regional aircraft on Mainlines' seniority list (Where they should have been in the first place). Ultimately, not immediately, that would be the best way to attract pilots.

All 9E bases are DL bases, and I'm bottom lineholder on the 320 in ATL this month...I have 19 days off (no vacation days) and am making way more than any 9E captain. I've been home for every milestone of my son.
Congratulations on getting to Delta at a good time. Alot of people become regional lifers because they were not as fortunate as you. That mainline job looks alot less rosy when you're staring at the back end of a hiring wave.

I am 30 years old but I'm only giving the whole mainline dream 3 more years, I figure after 3 there will be enough guys hired younger or of my same age hired that my career prospects will not be bright. In my case though I won't be hanging on to the industry at a regional but rather getting a job outside the industry. I can totally see how guys made a career of the regionals, timing and age has made the majors unattractive for alot of guys.

This.

Will it happen? Who knows. I tend to think not.

I'd say your window for a decent major career is a lot larger than three years.

At 33 you're going to give up on mainline? You still have potentially 22 years remaining. I cant even imagine the atmosphere in 5 years with all the projected retirements, economic factors, etc., might as well just walk away now.

If I can't end my career near the top of a seniority list I do t want to do it. 30+ years with 14 days off in a narrow body isn't much of a life in my eyes. Sitting right seat with 21 days off is it or bust for me.

Yeah 32, thanks. I think 14 days off in this job isn't enough, but really, less than 21 days off is unacceptable? Most jobs give you 8 to 10 days off. Have you ever done the monday thru friday with the daily commute? They can have it, I'll take the 14 days off.

I have done a mon-fri job and there is alot to be said for being home every night. To me if my days off aren't doubled over a normal job it's not worth it. 14 days off a month means missing most of your family's life events over the duration of a career.

I realize everyone has different priorities though I was just making a point to the Delta guy that it is true not everyone wants to go mainline if the circumstances aren't ideal.

I, uh.... wow. The average age of people hired at a legacy is around 35-40.

Someone hired tomorrow at the age of 33 would retire at around 300 on an 11,000 pilot list. If that's not good enough for you, whatever. Others will gladly take your place while you reduce your career earnings by around 2 million dollars.

I remember very clearly when I was given the projection of my career earnings and my advancement on the seniority list back in 1990, the same happened in 2001, on those two periods people were quoting the scheduled retirement numbers and the projected growth, people used phrases like "for the foreseeable future" and "unprecedented hiring numbers" "steady retirement stream" if there is one constant in this career is that it has never and will never be un upswing cycle for the rest of your career...!
