Why not know the captains flow? Its not brain surgery. Its fairly easy. Not saying Military style memorization but at least have an idea of what's going on

Because as a new hire you have enough to worry about.... Just focus on your flows and look over the captains flows when things calm down a little bit... You are overloaded as is, and no need to spend time on stuff that wont be on your oral.... That being said know the captains first flight of the day checks. Those kind s of things WILL be on your oral (like how to test the fire detection system, etc)..

Also depending on your company, there may be some powerpoint presentations with flow diagrams. At eagle, someone made one for the embraer that has different colored lines to show you where your hand should go.... If you are at Eagle on the Embraer let me know and ill see if I can dig it up....

Ive always learned both sets of flows for all the airplanes Ive flown. It helps round out your knowledge of the aircraft and can only benefit you.

Use a cockpit poster if avail- if not the panel diagrams in your systems manual.

Chilly, do you already have a class date somewhere with an aircraft assignment?

If so they should send a study packet of stuff they want you to know, usually the limitations.

Different companies will have different flows even for the same aircraft type if you picked up something online somewhere. That and even the same company will change things up every once in a while.

--- and to the original question.. SkyWest use to have the FOs learn the captain flow, but they gave that up 10+ years ago. Not a bad idea to know it, but I'd focus on everything else first.

Some airlines still require you to know the CA flows because your type is in the left seat. FO flows don't work too well over there.

Type at 9E is in the right seat. You only hop into the left seat for the taxi in.

I wasnt required to know any CA flows for my type ride. I didnt learn them either. I had no reason to.

What kind of airline are you going to that isnt giving you a mock up of the flight deck? Ive been through training with 2 of the cheapest airlines around, and even they gave us mock ups. Sounds like they are setting you up for failure. Good on you for taking the initiative. Thatll be wiped out of your system within 6 months of being a line pilot.

I can't speak to your specific situation however... I would concentrate on learning where everything is and YOUR flows as much as possible. Also learn the systems, non normals and emergency procedures, especially the high dive. Not that difficult if you apply yourself. The flows will get polished quickly and as far as the captains stuff, just follow their lead. Don't forget when faced with an emergency, the first thing you do is nothing! (Assess first, then act) Good luck

Fork out $40.00 and buy a nice paper tiger, and be a huge help to your sim partner by learning the CA flows.
