Default Questions

I am new to this forum and to the 121 world, how does the "reserve" thing work. I am also curious about how much flying a new hire at an airline like XJT or Skywest would do?

You basically have a 3-4 day schedule where you wait for them to call you for flights. Example day 1-4 you have to be ready for a call from 6am till 6pm. It gets complicated if you don't live on base because you'll have to figure out how to get to base for your duty. It basically sucks but that's the way it goes when you are junior in this industry. You will most likely get to fly a lot under reserve if you are a junior pilot so you'll get plenty of action, however there are times where you sit and wait and wait and wait.

Reserve can actually get quite complicated sometimes. Take my past 3 days for example. I'm a very senior FO in my company and I'm on reserve! No, I didn't bid for it either. What happened was that a new captain is doing IOE and my line pairing was with a check airman. They took me off my line and put me on RX so the new captain can sit left seat while the check airman sits in the right. I've been hanging out for 3 days and loving it because I still get paid full credit for my 3 day trip...about 20 hours instead of the 12 for regular reserve.

most of the new guys at xjt are only on reserve for about 3 months, because of the amount of hiring we're doing. the quickest time on reserve at the moment is in ewr, and iah isn't bad either. there's not many guys going to cle right now because the base is reducing in volume and most guys going there are going to be on reserve for a year plus.

I thought reserve was cool for the first...2 hours? It sucks. Get off when you can. You're filling in for all the stuff no one else wanted to do in the first place.

sharky ur right,

last week i did a 4 day which gave me 5.3 hrs of flight time it does blow but i wont be on reserve for much longer.

saab that sucks man but it's coz of fairweather bidding. guys from cle and ewr want iah in the winter for obvious reasons.

i'm set to go back to iah from ewr as of jan 1st.

can't wait it's cold as sh*t here!!

Aussie,
Since you only flew 5.3 hours... is that all you got paid for over 4 days? Or do you still get a base/min rate?

Aussie - I feel your pain....

DMB - As for getting paid...I don't know about other contracts but ours gives 4.0 hours for each day of reserve you get used on, so a 5.3 hour 4 day would equal 20 hours of pay for me. But if you don't break monthly guarantee...that doesn't mean jack.
