Airline pilot shortage coverage on NPR

I take it you are one of those parents? In my relatively few life experiences, the kids that were coddled by their parents and had a free ride through college turned out to be some of the least respectful, condescending, most ungrateful d-bag's I've ever encountered. On the flip-side I understand some of them turn out to be great people as well, but you get my point... I view it as doing them a favor to help them where needed, but not giving them an entirely free ride... I don't have or desire to have kids though (also couldn't afford to if I wanted to), but if I did, I'd feel like it would be beneficial to them in the long run to raise them without carte blanche to my credit card. I don't condone the Corvettes or speedboats either, but you can't deny the truth in that paradigm shift. Maybe I'm just biased, or maybe I just don't like a land of unequal opportunity.
Also - you sure do have some string ideas on how you would raise kids.
I hope you could actually put a lot of that into practice if you get the chance, but without actually having walked in those shoes you sure thorw down the law freely enough.
Yeah - I get the point of your message.
Some kids grow up being good people and some don't.

Sorry Dan - if you don't like this "land of unequal opportunity", exactly where do you think you'll find that Nirvana?

Not "this" land of unequal opportunity, I said "a" land... I'm quite happy living where I do... My girlfriend has a son. I do my best to teach him what I believe to be good values. It is a battle though, her family spoils the hell out of him, and even the mother agrees with me on this one, because it has negative effects on this behavior, and in school. So while not exactly walking in the same shoes, I still believe it is a better way...

True but roger Cohen and company devalue instructing and other time building jobs so that sitting in the right seat of a crj900 is an entry level job justifying pitiful wages. The harder it is ad the more sacrifice required toget to that 121 job will cause people to demand more and see their own value .
I think the original writers of the commercial flight hours regs didn't foresee the right seat of medium to large turbine aircraft as being the job for someone with 250 hours. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say right seats in medium/large turbine aircraft was unthinkable at 250 hours. Doing things like traffic watch, pipeline patrol, instructing, banner towing, diver driving was probably the intent. Heck, when you get *really* seasoned, at 500 hours, you can do VFR 135!
I believe there was a hiring period at the mainlines when some fairly low time people got picked up.....was it the 60's? But I would imagine many spent their initial time flying sideways.
None the less, I don't blame pilots for doing what they think is best to develop themselves. I just think having a more building block approach in gaining pilot experience is a natural and good progression.

I am one of those "parents" and I don't see how coming into the Corporate, money loving world in debt makes you a better person. You say you have " relatively few" life experiences and I can tell by your post's. You CAN raise your children to have an appreciation of what they have and of what they can accomplish on their own. I ain't gonna do their homework, attend class for them or straighten out their misdeeds. I will however, give them a pathway to success. The rest is up to them.

I just love how condescending you are. You fit the exact profile I'm talking about, which leads me to believe you were also raised with a silver soon as well. And let me guess "My son would never do that" or "My daughter would never say such a thing!" is a common line for you guys? The same mentality of screw everyone else, me first, screw your kids, mine first. Thank you for exemplifying the exact point I was trying to make and making yourself look like number 1 on everyone's no fly list.
