You don't want to do ORD-DTW as commute! Horrible! EWR-DTW much easier.

Reason I ask is because all I hear these days is that it is nearly impossible to find anyone that even wants to apply never-mind anyone qualified. This was told to me by one of our captains that was on maternity leave a couple of months ago. She was assisting the recruiting team in finding people because they were trying to get a head start on hiring.

She conveyed a message that seemed pretty straight forward on the lack of applicants. So they were either looking for pilots on the wrong side of Daytona Beach and have now figured out where they went wrong or someone is making crap up.
Apparently they have gotten so desperate they actually interview guys with DUIs and felonies.

This is what I heard, I don't know how accurate.

Well I'm glad to hear about hiring on the CRJ side at least. Good news. We need movement after 5+ years of no movement.

If the drive from ORD-DTW is less than 3 hours, might be worth it! I hear ORD-ATL isn't too bad even though it's farther away. There are a ton of flights between DTW and ORD but I'm guessing mostly full and anything not flown by delta is a 15-30 minute bus ride/run to the other terminal. Upside is they have Known Crew Member in both terminals.

ORD-DTW is longer than 3 hrs drive, more like 4. Yes, tons of flight between those two cities, but they always mostly full and lots of commuters between those two cities.

To anyone who wants ORD or any other EMB base I'd interview at least just to get in the pool. Last fall the CRJ side was stagnant, offering LOA's and had rumors of furlough but look what's happening now. The sky is not falling at this company. Good to see some movement, period.

Man if thats true then where the hell are the pilots going to come from when people start leaving soon?

I listened to NPR yesterday that had the douche from the RAA and Lee Moak, plus the guy that wrote the WSJ article. Lots of good points made, but they really failed to get to the root of the problem (crappy pay and benefits etc etc); they touched on it a bit but they mostly talked about the new rest rules and the ATP requirement. There prob wont be a shortage at mainline but here on the regional level it will be sooner rather than later.

To be fair, when has crappy pay and benefits stopped anyone from taking a regional job?

It hasn't, primarily because of the apparent potential in the future. With aircraft getting larger and mainline shrinking to profitability, I don't see a pilot shortage in our future. Everyone will get smaller, but will carry more passengers per employee.

I don't know what to believe any more. Unless I just happen to bust into the class in progress there really is no way to get an accurate picture. Everyone has something to gain by telling you the story they heard.

Two facts are:

CRJ has seen very little growth. Everything that has happened this year has been pretty much neutral. We give up 200's and get some 900's. We gave up a bunch of 700's to you know who. So when the wash cycle is done next spring the amount of flying as a whole will most likely be the same as it was spring of 2012.

My seniority number with the company since Feb has changed 16 numbers. I'm fairly junior (FO working weekends and holidays) so where is all this need for pilots coming from?

That's what makes me wonder about all these huge pilot classes being filled up. I just like to know the truth on that stuff and no one on the line or around the GO has a straight answer.
