I used to live in Miami, and it's really not too bad if you like tropical. And clearly you don't know too many Cubans. They're very different from most other Hispanic groups. You should spend some time down on Calle Ocho before you generalize and slur.
That said, if MIA opens as a base, it will be one of our most senior, considering how many FL commuters we have.

I think the coming UAL 700/900 flying is going to be spread out over the next 3 years and if we don't have an SLI by then it will be a complete mess. Skywest has already negotiated with the different rj manufacturers and they are keeping those negotiations very close to the chest. I think you will see more CRJ 900's in the short term but perhaps another fleet added with a geared turbofan engine. I think that skywest is under the impression that the brand new crj900 next gen's are the old technology (the 50 seaters of the future) and the same size regional jet made out of composite and with a more fuel efficient engine will be their replacement.
The MRJ agreement is not finalized and it will be interesting if Embraer or Bombardier want to create a 76 seater to compete.

I think the MRJ thing was just to pressure Bombardier to get serious in negotiations. I could see SkyWest ("mainline") starting a LCC with "geared turbofan" aircraft sometime in the future when there's no longer a need of regional feed. I suspect that's SGU's master plan. But until then (and we're probably talking a decade here), it's going to be CRJ 700/900s and large Embraers feeding the legacy carriers. Most of the new scope has specific language limiting or excluding "geared turbofan aircraft".
I also think we're going to see a resurgence of small turboprop feed. Silver is leading the way on that, and Great Lakes is making a comeback. What's old is new again...
