I took a Q400 once from ORF to IAD, as United Express, it was empty, and went out fairly late in the evening like 8pm.
We do it twice a day to MIA on Eagle, 50 seater, its usually around 40 of 50, sometimes full. We do it once a day to/from JFK the loads are all over the place.

Operated a flight there once EWR-ORF, all 50 seats were taken, plus had one guy in the jumpseat. The way back ORF-EWR, also had about half a dozen commuters, all the seats in the back were taken but still had 2 open jumpseats. Guess I've only been there once but it was pretty full.

commuting to or from orf sucks. I commuted to MIA on eagle for over a year, good crews just two flights a day. If you live somewhere within one flight away it maybe can be bare-able. doing a two legs through phl.clt. atl. dtw, etc suck also. It seemed like they were all full most of the time.

Commuting out of ORF is miserable. The only city with possibly an excess of seats is ATL. Possibly BWI.
If you are going to be based there, move there. If you live there and are going to be based anywhere it's not an easy 1-leg commute, move out of ORF.
I've done the ORF thing and it's not an easy place to commute to or from. Living and being based there is not bad though, as long as you don't have to try to get in or out.

^^^ True Story, on the dozen or so times I have gone to and from ORF to visit friends it is always tough. On every occasion I was 1 of at least 2 if not 3 jumpseaters.

I did a 2 leg commute to ORF for about 2 years. It wasn't fun. Prob is that there arent many options late in the evening. It's been 5+ years now but I believe the latest flight I could catch out was like 7 pm or something like that. Granted, I also had to make a connection in ATL or CLT so maybe that is why 7 was the latest I could commute out. There were a lot of RJ's and seemed to always be full. Good luck. Living in base is definitely the way to go.
