The shortage is like global warming. A lot of people may believe it but that doesn't make it true.

Default Pilot Shortage Kool-Aid

You guys crack me up with this "pilot shortage BS". Allow me to give some a dose of reality. There is no and will never be a pilot shortage. Do you want to know why? (1) There are too many blood sucker pilots willing to work for slave wages and even for free (you know who you are). (2) Mergers and Consolidation in the industry will always contribute to the already surplus of pilots in the pipeline. Everyone should know that you do not Merge an airline to grow, you merge an airline for market share. Therefore when an airline merge they shrink, not grow. Your surplus of pilots come from post merger airlines. Large airplane orders are mainly for scheduled replacements over the course of 10-20 years so as you gain market share you can still remain competitive. Again not for growth. The only time there will be ever a pilot shortage is when you receive phone calls from the airlines without even applying and them begging you to come work for them. Until that happens, don't hold your breath and try to constructively make use of your time like getting this industry back to where it needs to be. This industry has been gutted and DESTROYED by the UNIONs and MANAGEMENT. You've allowed these people to misrepresent you, sell you BS in a bird sanctuary. So many have tried to "save the airline" in the name of your child's college savings, your retirement, and your family vacation. Enough is Enough. Its time to demand what you deserve! If an airline tells you "oh we dont have money to do this, we can pay you that, then tell them #$%^^% stop selling $70 round trip tickets.

P.S There are some in upper management and within some unions that honestly do fight hard for their employees. We applaud those who try.

Yes management....we are the 1% :P There hasn't been a shortage since the 60's when guys had only PPL and were PAID to get the rest of their ratings as well as training and a type.

I'll believe in the "pilot shortage" when I see it.

I saw it, personally, last year. I got called and offered a direct entry captain job at an airline that I applied to about 18 months before and had forgotten about. They were desperate for pilots so they went back into their old files and were calling every phone number they had. They had even checked on me and found out that I had gotten a great job in the meantime, but they wanted to call me directly to confirm that I would not be interested in the Captain position.

Not sure about a "shortage" but 50% of DAL retires in the next 10 years and 60% of combined AMR Airways retires in the next 8 years. Everyone currently at a Regional will have a job to move up to, the Regionals will continue to consolodate, shrink and some will liquidate. So while there may be fewer students in the pipeline, there will also be fewer Regional jobs to fill....aka....No shortage. The peak of the retirement wave is around 2027 and right around 2032-33 the numbers retireing are similar to present numbers. There is and will be no "shortage".

Believe in what you want. I bet you have better chances of being furloughed then seeing a shortage..
