Default Logbook Time Review

I currently fly for a 135 operator in which they keep a spreadsheet of our flight times for legal reasons (mainly duty). I am about to leave the company in 2 weeks and will hopefully be going to fly for either Compass or ExpressJet.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been reviewing my logbooks to ensure accuracy. I requested a summary of flight times from my current employer, and noticed that their records are inaccurate...they show MORE flight time than I actually have (by about 10-20 hours in some areas). My question is, when I go to interview at a regional, will that regional request flight times from my previous employers or will they just go off of my logbook?

My company is coming out with a new program for tracking our flight times and informed us that they would be unable to import our old flight times into their new program...the problem is that this new program for tracking times will not be live until after I leave the company...should I even worry about all this? Thanks.

If you can find the inconsistency in the records, adjust things as needed for the number you know is accurate.

If you can't verify what is accurate and what isn't, go with the most conservative of the two. Having an accurate, conservative, logbook is a lot more important than 10-20 hours in the long run. It isn't likely that the regional will request times from your previous employer, but if they do, it would only cause a problem if you showed you had more time than your employer shows.

I can't tell by your message, but do you already have job offers at Compass and ExpressJet? If not, I won't try to get into why you're already leaving your current employment, but just know that it is much (much much much) easier to get a job when you currently have a job in this industry. Being current and actively flying are a lot more important in an interview than 10-20 hours in a logbook.

Your logbook will suffice, they won't call to check it, even so, yours is less than what the company has. Would not worry about what your company does after you leave.

Errbus,

The reason that I am leaving is that the contract for my particular run was cancelled. I do not have any hard offers yet, but I have very good connections at both Compass and ExpressJet and was told that when I was about 1-2 weeks out from my last day at my current company, to go ahead and submit my application and that an interview would likely follow shortly thereafter. Nothing promised, but it seems like chances are good for either one to pull through...I just have to do my part and not jack anything up. I am trying to ensure a fairly smooth/quick transition from one job to another if possible.

As for the logbook and company records, I cannot pin-point where the error is, and company will not adjust to my records, so from what you all are telling me, I think that it is in my best interest to just leave my records as they are and ensure what I have (in my book) is accurate...which it is. I feel as if the company might have recorded my times wrong when I was initially hired, along with the fact that they are not keeping track of any miscellaneous non-commercial flying that I do in my free time.

I just wanted to be sure that I did not take any flak for my records differing from the 135 records...but if the regional guys don't even request records from employers, it should not be an issue and I won't worry about it. Thanks for the input!

Could the difference in hours be pay vs block?
Meaning that company tracked you hours for pay purposes..?

That all sounds reasonable to me. A clean conservative logbook will give you points in the interview.

I would go ahead and apply now. In fact, I would've applied yesterday. These things take time, you want to get started right away. It can be months from first application to first day of class. Also, go ahead and apply everywhere that you'd be interested in working, it doesn't hurt... you can always turn down interview offers later, but in the meantime, don't artificially limit your chances to just two airlines. You never know if things will work out with either of them.

AviHaters,

We are salaried and not paid by flight hour, so I don't think that is the case...at least not in my particular situation.

Errbus,

I really don't know much about regionals other than what I have read and discussed with friends...are they usually flexible when it comes to interview dates? Reason that I ask is that my current employer will not grant me any time off between now and my last day. So, if for some reason, I did indeed get an interview before my last day, would they be flexible with the date and allow me to interview after my last day at my current job? This was the main reason why I was postponing my application...but if they are flexible, then I will just go ahead and apply now to avoid any further delay.

Even if they interview you now, it is common to sit in a hiring pool for several months. If your company is firing you, why would you not interview now? Who cares if you missed one day of work for "personal" reasons. I would be blasting out resumes to every conceivable point on the globe. It's easier then it was a few years ago to find a job but it is still not easy, it's a bit more like winning the lottery (then again I'm way out of the hiring loop these days). To answer your question depends on how desperate the airline is for pilots. If they are flooded you might get one phone call. If you don't pick up your resume goes in the trash. If the need pilots they will shedule whenever you would like. The question then becomes which operator you want to work for. If you have a choice I would stay away from the one that needs you.
