And it amazes me to know some pilots are flying 50-70 seater airplanes and making less than me. Maybe you should of saw what was going on and stayed put as an instructor instead of believing in false promises of fast upgrades and useless SIC time.
Aren't you getting useless PIC time? I did 4 years of instructing at a descent wage also, among other types of flying. I held out for a "good" regional with a descent contract to make more money sitting right seat. I kick back, eat my snacks, shoot the **** with the CA's, and collect bigger checks and enjoy better benefits. No one promised a fast upgrade and when it happens it happens.

You traded the 5 years of turbo prop hell with boxes all night, for 5 more years at the commuter, in the end you break even.
Got a valid point. Wish more people could see this.

Less than you on a per-hour or total income basis?

That's a pretty bold post for somebody who just two months ago said were only netting $1100/mo as an instructor and moved back home to live with mom & dad where rent & groceries were at no cost to you.

There aren't many flight instructors (especially part-timers) that gross more than regional FOs, especially those off probationary pay. If you're one of those, more power to you...but it looks like you make $900/week working a "day job" and instruct on the side.

But after 4 years of on/off instructing and now looking down your nose at regional FOs, where are you? How much twin and/or turbine time do you have? Are you employable/insurable for any job flying multi-turbine equipment?

All my "useless" RJ SIC time got me was instantly insurable as a captain on a business jet with less than 3000tt.

All I know is if it took longer to become a pilot, than it does a hair dresser, maybe starting out pay would be better...

Create more barriers to entry, and let the regionals run out of pilots - I like it!

From one Boilermaker alumnus to another...

That's rather humorous coming from somebody who got their first regional job with well under 1000tt, due in no small part to Prof. Bernie Wulle working with Piedmont to get a low-time hiring program set up back in 2004.

That's good, I'm glad you held out for a "good regional". More pilots should be doing that. I'm holding out too, I just found a better place to sit tight at.

My point i'm trying to make is that most pilots complain about pay. Yet, they chase Jet time and turbine time. Wait a second you want to get paid well right? Then get paid well now doing whatever it is your doing. Why are you waiting 10 years down the road in hopes of getting paid well. Demand the decent wage now or find work somewhere else until they pony up the bucks.

I am standing on the sidelines, when you can't make more than someone on unemployment. Why bother.

your right BoilerUp, I was extremely lucky... I did instruct at LafAv for 2 years, and flew a twin on the field. However, this still does not change my opinion on pay nor the time line to becoming a pilot.

Considering I make my own schedule and go to sleep in the same bed every night.
