Hulas never flies airplanes at a loss. That being said. Economy of scale is important. That's why hulas wants to grow to try and be a player. But he has just shy of 100 planes. Which pales in comparison to skywest/republic/colgan.

Delta owns those 9s. A regional owns very few of anything and when the papa bears wants to renegotiate the contract and reduce the compensation the leasing company does not care, hence lower revenues. One of the primary reasons Mesa is in the situation that it is. Inefficient (old) airplanes don't make as much money either for the Regional nor the Mainline carrier.
