That's correct, they give you the jumpseat assignment at the gate. However, (and this is probably airport specific) I've found certain gate agents find it quite the inconvenience to create a reservation for you. I even had one lady suggest I go back out security to check in at the counter. But that's commuting out of BWI for you, ymmv

Wow...even at EWR the SWA guys and gals were great, sorry to hear BWI isn't so lucky (never thought I'd say EWR was better than anywhere else).
