Why they do that? a Q&A with NY approach.

Why is it that every time on my last leg to LGA when I check on I get slowed to 180 knots? During the middle of my trips when I want to make money I get direct to DIALS for the stupid Expressway! Do you guys know my schedule??
P.S. thank you for the thousand and thousands of dollars you've added to my paychecks over the years!

How come on a clear day going from PHL to JFK we got a 1.5 hour wheels up time after we pushed and started taxing. No one (clearance, ground, dispatch, FAA website) knew of this delay until we were halfway to the runway. We talked to our dispatcher and he said no other aircraft have been delayed going into JFK all day. Does it have to do with the proximity of the two airports? Even the ground controller was surprised and said he would have someone make a few phone calls. They got it down to 40 minutes but was still surprising. I guess with JFK surprising should be taken from my vocabulary.
Also who are you guys talking to on the "land line"? I missed a few radio calls once and jokingly said I was on the land line and it seemed to really upset the controller.

The one I don't get is when we check on 3 or 4 times and get no response and the controller issues instructions to another airplane. If he would just say, "xxxx standby" we wouldn't keep calling. I don't know if he/she has heard or if I have a radio problem or what.
It results in a lot of blocked transmissions and needless waste of valuable airtime, especially on the east coast.
As to the guy who whined about the slow-climbing RJs, ask your own company. They're the ones who wanted them.

We have to play with the cards we're dealt. If the RJ took off ahead of you, there is not much I can do from the approach side. We're required to hand you off to the center with constant or increasing spacing, on the route (usually climbing to or leveled at 16000 over Coate). It is up to the center to decide whether to use altitude separation, and let everyone run at normal speed.

Sometimes I see LGA arrivals cruising at over 320 over the ground past RBV still @10000, and there are times they're all zig zagging all over the sky at 180. Timing is everything. That's something that depends on traffic volume at the time. If you're always getting hit with that 180 restriction, then you're probably scheduled to come in at the tail end of a peak,

Too many variables. Like the bumber sticker reads/ "sh*t happens!"
As for the land line coment. We talk to the tower, other in house radar sectors, adjacent approach controls, and the center. In addition, we could be talking with the handoff controller, or another radar sector next to us.
And yes, I will talk to whomever is more important for me to talk to. Priorities are priorities. talking to the departure that just took off, or the arrival that jsut check in over the inbound fix is less important than solving a potential onflict, or turning somebody on final before the blow through the localizer.
