Oh yeah? what do you think Pinnacle is doing for Mesaba pilot's who are on the street. Those guys get to skip first year pay at Pinnacle and get to keep the Mesaba senority number. You think this is special what SW is doing? Pinnacle already started doing this a few weeks ago.

I beg to differ. During initial we were all given the option prior to training of requesting single occupancy. We would however be responsible for half of what the room would normally cost. So as I understand if you request single occupancy they should be able to accommodate whatever the class size.

All the replies are great, thanks.

If those who have gone through the 120 training recently, ie current syllabus, what are the "catches" that you have encountered. In other words, if anyone has a piece of advice for a Skywest new hire, what would you like to have told yourself when you started?

During the first few weeks of indoc. do they pos. space you home? What are the good places to eat near the hotel?

Glad to hear they have changed their policy. When I was hired in July of 2005 all I know is my request was denied. For the reasons I wrote above.

As I recall once you get your company ID badge which takes a week or so, you can go home if you choose as a standby/space available employee. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.

As far as restaurants go, there is Pizza restaurant called Lofte's right next to the hotel. There is also a bar owned by the same people called Lofte's as well right next to the pizza place. You will probably get to know both Lofte's places really well. Most new hires do.

Other wise for food, just down from Lofte's is a restaurant that looks like an old Denny's, but it is not a Denny's, I don't know what it is called, I've never eaten there. A further 15 minute or so walk down the street will get you to a Wendy's, A&W, Taco Bell (I think), a real Denny's, gas station/convenience store, etc.

A 30-40 minute walk further down the street will get you to a place called The Gateway Shopping center. Regular sit down restaurants, shopping, etc. Really nice area. In my opinion, probably the best shopping/eating in Salt Lake City.

If you walk to The Gateway (30 to 40 minute walk) at about the 20-25 minute mark in your walk, on the north side of the street is a Mexican restaurant called "The Red Iguana". I highly recommend it. It is a local favorite and on a Friday or Saturday night, you could wait up to an hour to get a table.

Good luck in training! Skywest is a great company!

Well, nobody has gone through recently. They haven't hired since June 2008. there's a mediocre family style restaurant nearby, and a bar/pizza pub. You can walk 10 minutes east on West North Temple, and there's the usual fast food; Denny's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, KFC, etc.

Don't forget to say hi to the prostitutes / drug addicts hanging out just east of the bridge on West North Temple, in front of the hourly rent motel on the south side of the road ;-)

For the US mountain west, the bus service is surprisingly good. The 522 route should get you to downtown.

The 550 bus should get you to the airport:

A few more things for the United furloughs to consider: I would find out for sure what happens to your pay after year one. I undestand that United is bumping your first year pay up to 2nd year CRJ pay, but what after that? Unlike 5 years ago where many United furloughs were able to jump over SKW employees for transition or upgrades (to augment the loss of salary match after year 1), this will not be happening this time around and you may end up on the EMB 120 (Bro) for your entire stay at SKW. Please make sure you know what happens after year one since Bro FO pay is lackluster at best. That is really the second thing to be aware of. The only Bro base outside of California is SLC. If you end up on that for awhile just make sure you are aware of the domiciles and make sure it works best for you if you end up 2-3 years without a transition to the jet. I think even if the Mesa or Comair rumors pan out that our growth will be a short push and then plateau again for awhile. Just my opionion.

I hope this helps with the decisions that some of you are making. Many low seniority pilots made life plans based on SKW's rosy growth cycle and have been struggling with what became their reality. Plan for the worst case scenario and it should be all uphill from there. If not, there are several pilots that can tell you that low seniority at a regional is not the life they certainly had in mind when starting out.

Good luck to all.

SLC isn't the only E120 base outside CA, there's also PDX but most will get the RJ transition before they can even smell a transfer to OR.

Are they for sure putting you guys up at the Candlewood? I like the Crystal Inn better so much around there. I was in very last class here, really easy the hardest thing is the systems but if you study your set!
