Attention Sky West Poolies..............
Anyone else get this?
January 14, 2010
Dear Future SkyWest Pilots,
As many of you may already know, we are holding off on hiring pilots.
Rather than bring on any “net new” positions, the decision was made to recall pilots who are on voluntary leaves of absence. Each month we will continue to monitor our staffing levels to determine our needs. At the time of this decision, no additional voluntary leaves will be granted and those who are currently on a leave of absence will be brought back as their leave expires. Extensions will be granted on a case-by-case basis depending on our staffing in each crew position and domicile.
I have been hearing from many of your mentors. I hope that you are all finding this program to be both valuable and useful. Please continue to look to them as well as myself for the help that you require.
The topic of the “abbreviated interview” has left many with questions and concerns. Let me attempt to eliminate both. Our intent with this process is to evaluate and re-assess where each of you are in your flying skills, knowledge, back ground changes, etc. It is and always has been the mission of the interview team, to deliver to the training department individuals whom we feel will be successful and add value to our company. It is our responsibility to ensure that this is the case. The effects of this economic down-turn have caused a variety of things to occur. It is our goal to identify each of these things and together, help you get back on track, if needed.
The abbreviated process will consist of the following:
It is important to note that you may be placed back into the pool until we determine that you are prepared.
You will be given the time you need in order to prepare for this day.
I should come as no surprise that, as an airline, we look at every level of a pilot’s status to ensure consistency, safety and good leadership.
I hope you can all appreciate the position we have been placed in as a result of this industry wide slow-down, and the need to stop hiring in order to remain financially strong. We certainly can appreciate your situation, but know that our decision to postpone hiring will make your future even brighter, once things turn around.
I would hope that you continue to look to SkyWest for your career path, understanding that we embody deep core values with great leadership and integrity. I would urge you to strive and embrace our vision of excellence.
As always, please let me know if I can be of any assistance and remember also to utilize the resources of your mentor.
Best Regards,
Camielle
Hate to say it, but this is the best thing they could do? The sign of great management. Times are tough. Hang in there folks.

It seems a little abrasive and insensitive considering 40 people in the pool were cancelled from groundschool with very little notice. I know a few that never gained employment within aviation since then. Probably the worst time in history to get dumped from a class after quitting your previous job.

Not furloughed just guys from the pool. It almost seems like the reinterview is not really a pass/fail thing just if you are not quite prepared you go back in the pool as opposed to getting a class date?

Far as I know there are zero furloughs at Skywest. If they had em, they'd be calling them back first. They previously offered (before changing to their voluntary leave pilots) some of the spots to furloughed ASA pilots. Wouldn't have done that if they had furloughs of their own.
And about the second "interview", don't stress it guys. Frasca, CRM? It's not going to be hard if you have basic aviation skills and knowledge. Just do what they ask and be happy when you're finally in class. Getting hired by an airline isn't supposed to be a cake walk.

SkyWest doesn't have furloughed pilots. They are closing down the ATL crew domicile and placing them in different bases. They are not letting them go. If your talking about ASA pilots that are furloughed that's a different story. ASA pilots are not part of the SkyWest seniority list therefore they just can't be recalled. They have to be interviewed and go through training first.
