I don't think it is. I wish the press would get in on some if this and give cal a tough time. I hate to bash on colgan but the pay rates bring down the industry and even though your pilots crash due to poor training it is still less expensive for cal to go with you then a carrier that has a great safety record. The fact that THE bottom feeding airline that just planted a Q into the earth is hiring so many people who by their own admittance were not qualified really gets to me.

Well I can't say I'm surprised.
Colgan will not be hiring the 10,000 DC-10 captain who's down on his luck. It's almost guaranteed that this guy would leave the moment a better job came up. The fellow who can't even pass a basic written exam, however, is cash money.
Hiring someone who is exactly qualified to work at a place like Colgan will not be able to leave as soon as the economy improves. The last thing Colgan wants is to do a Mesa and lose pilots faster than they can train newbies.
While they have set their minimums to 1500 total time, that doesn't mean they are hiring Chuck Yeagers. As we all know there are many, many folks who qualify for ATPs that shouldn't be in the left seat of a C-152. Those are probably the types that the Colgan HR folks are looking for.

TO the gentleman who got the second chance to come back next week, b careful what you say on here because Colgan does check the forums!
Secondly Paul is the Director of training
Sam O is the check Airman and has been with Colgan for 11 years
Andrew / Andy is the Cheif pilot in EWR but USMC can confirm this one for you.

I interviewed this past weekend. I was an idiot, and did not pass the written...got a 72 and needed an 80. However, Chuck gave me a huge break and invited me back to interview the next day. Interview went great, and now he's flying me back to retake the written and do the sim. Don't use my situation as a reason to be lax on the written though. I am extremely gracious and thankful that I am getting a second chance, and will be making sure to do better this time. I had passed the ATP written over a year ago, and only re-studied certain core chapters that I thought the most emphasis would be placed on. I would recommend studying ALL chapters, with the exception of the W&B and performance calculations.
It was great to meet all of you this past weekend, and hope to see you in class soon. If anyone would like more details on my experience, feel free to PM me.

"The guy who shouldn't have been hired in the first place was at the controls."
Some things are better left unsaid. Your statement was one of them.
P.S. I'm not predicting or hoping that you will be involved in some type of incident or accident. Simply a comment that heads will roll (as they should have after 3407) if another bombshell regarding inexperience/incompetence is dropped in the wake of an incident.

The thing that bothers me most is that you need 80% to pass the written test in order to move on or you'll be send home, but in this case Colgan bent the rules and is willing to give this candidate another shot.
They expect us pilots and crews to follow the rules and operating procedures...

My apologies for a completely inappropriate and unnecessary post. Thank you all for setting me straight. Open mouth, insert foot.

Yeah, when you're a young buck with a nice car. That's how much my my car insurance cost when I was 19 with a new car. Now same car and 31 years old, costs 25 per month. Hang in there young sappling...Take care of the car you got, you might keep it alot longer than you think, cosidering your an underpaid pilot.

I didn't really get to talk with Chuck much. I was mostly with Sarah, Paul and with Sam in the sim. Sarah is very nice and makes you feel right at home. Paul asked some damn good wwyd question, some that weren't so hard but made you think and one that caught me off guard about a being seen at a bar scenario. The sim ride was a lot of fun Sam had a good profile for us. All were very professional and look forward to a phone call this week.
