I have an interview lined up with Colgan this weekend. I really don't want to work for them, and I wasn't planning on doing any following up with them. Chuck Colgan called me the other day and asked me up for an interview. I accepted, but I just wrote them an email requesting to cancel my interview. I just can't go from Mesa to Colgan. One crappy regional to an even crappier regional. Going there will not help our industry, and it will not help the Colgan pilots. I'll find a job doing something else. I'm not making myself miserable there. I can make more money and be happier doing something local here until the industry picks up again and I can get on with a respectable carrier that treats their people properly. I've been through enough at MAG. I'm not about to take a step backwards.

Thanks but no thanks Colgan.

That's in the past, but for new instructors, I always say, don't go someplace that makes you work when your not with a student. I think that is actually illegal in a bunch of states. They are suppose to pay you minimum wage in some states when you are at the desk. I believe some instructors won a big lawsuit regarding this.

Instructors are making $30-$50/hour right now flying Cessna 152's. Don't tell me that's worse than Colgan.
I had a really good friend who had a pretty good instruction gig down in Arizona teaching Europeans how to fly. She went on to Colgan after I told her to hold out for a better opportunity. Now she is no longer with us. Her husband told the NTSB: He reported her finances as stable with no changes other than the significant pay decrease since she joined Colgan compared to her previous job as a flight instructor for Sabena Airline Training School in Mesa, Arizona.

I've called in fatigued a few times and have not had any pay removed due to calling in fatigued.

I am not scared to call in fatigued.

I am not scared to call in sick on a holiday.

I have a commuter policy.

Part 91 reposition flights are counted as part 121 flights when it comes to flight time duty time rules.

I am starting a four day on the last day of the month worth 18 hours, I also am scheduled to start a four day worth 21 hours on the first day of next month. I will fly the four day starting the last day of the month and
the last day of the second four day trip making it a five day trip. I will fly 23 hours and get paid for 39.

I can use a vacation day in the middle of a four day trip that does not return to base until the last leg on the last day and get paid for the whole trip while only using one vacation day.

Even guys with a little bit of relative seniority on reserve can have a decent schedule by bidding (profering) for the next day's open time.

I didn't say I was better. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. But it IS a crappier gig than Mesa, and I don't feel like dealing with that. I owe it to myself, not anyone else, to get a better job... even if it's not in the airline industry.

And you know what.... it DOES start with one pilot saying no. Will one pilot make a difference? Probably not. But it has to start somewhere.

If you keep averaging 20+ posts a day you will smoke Rickair in no time.

The problem is that I do not think you should be able to count the same posting over and over again as a unique and different post. Today you probably have 3 originial posts out of your 70+.

Would you mind sharing a side by side comparison of a "preferred regional"? I hear ASA has good work rules?
yeah, there are a LOT of little nitty gritty things that make the difference. the things I listed are a few of them, there are many, many more. I probably couldn't even guess half of the stuff ASA or expressjet have in their contract because we at colgan have never had the benefit of having those rules. it's things like having a 12 hr duty day and getting paid only for block of 3 hrs, whereas at a place that has a duty rig or daily min credit you might get a few more hours of pay. if you want to know how those little things (soft credit) make a difference in the end, just check out that how much did you make thread... you will see guys making 40k on 2nd year FO pay or whatnot - those are the guys working at places like ASA. that is still more than most saab CA 2nd year pay even though they are FOs and they probably worked less too!
but that's just monetary. you might have a zillion dollars in the bank and not care. but the difference in work rules also results in better scheduling practices, etc etc etc that results in overall better Quality Of Life for the employee. for many, this is even more important than actual pay.
