Jeez. That's scary. It's one of my worst fears as a pilot.. having a control problem like that.

Awesome job by the crew. That's amazing.

Yes it was a handful. The "airplane" couldn't fly again but everyone lived.

Hasn't the EMB135/145 had a long history of elevator jams? I seem to recall several incidents like this a few years ago.

Not elevator jams but trim failures and yes they do suck. I think anyone with over a few hundred hours in them has probably had one.

Never had one in over 3000 hours in the EMB 145 (prob will have one tomorow now that I said that)...but I think when the plane first came out there were a lot of problems with guys waiting too long to trim the plane after takeoff. The trim motors just were (still are I guess) not strong enough to move the stab....pretty sure thats why EMB says to start trimming before 160kts now.

Didn't read the the article, but sounds like the crew had a hell of a fight getting it down without killing anyone.

Over 5000 hours in the 145 and never had a trim failure. I did fly two flights, unknowingly, of course, with only 1/2 (one side) of the elevator working, though. Long story short, MX was going to MEL the flight director until the CA strongly urged them to look deeper.

In fairness to the media, there already was a little aviation story going on that day.

I had one April 2001. Happened right after takeoff with the "Gear Up" call.
