Default Thank you XJT FO

LAX-ORD commute, full as always. Find out the UAL '57 has only one jumpseat. XJT FO on the list ahead of me says he's going in for fun, not work. Proceeds to give me the jumpseat instead. Made it to work no sweat, hopefully he got on the next flight. Class act. Thank you.

You may continue the sh!t flinging.

Not to toot my own horn but I have done the same. Jumpseating from ATL to IAD on Delta to go hang out with some friends for the weekend, I gave up the jumpseat request to the AirTran FO who was going home.

Good jumpseat karma rocks!

So true. You have to help people out when you can. That way, when your in a pinch (which we all get into at one point or another), we'll be on the receiving end (hopefully).

Pay it forward.

I wouldn't consider it tooting your own horn - I think it is great!
I hope rather that your story will be taken as more of an inspiration to HELP out pilots instead of beating each other down. I'm not even a professional pilot and I can't believe what I see on this forum so often. Pilots **attacking** each other - over stuff that they either can't control or just stuff that doesn't even matter (reference recent thread about AIRSPEED betwen two aircraft)! Good job cencal......I hope more act in the same way.

I've done it before multiple times also. It was always when I commuted to the east coast for work and was waiting to go home. Usually just start with idle chit chat, ask how many days off he's got, if he's married with kids, etc

If it sounded like his two days off at home were going to be busier than mine, etc., I'd just let him take it. I can take the next one.

As far as going to work goes, my last company had a very solid commuter clause, so it was easy to give up the seat to the guy having a hard day. Call scheduling, tell them I couldn't get on the first attempt, trying for the second, hang up the phone and wait it out.

I believe in commuting karma, as stated above. But you'd be surprised how dog eat dog some guys can be about the JS. It was worse (way worse) before the majors got rid of their archaic "only as many JS'er as JS's installed" crap.

I don't know/understand the culture of the JS and what seems to be the myriad of rules/etiquette associated with jumpseating; but after being on this forum for a short period of time I came to realize that it wasn't a simple process. I mean I learned that arilines had jumpseat committees and that you should file grievances for example. As much as the industry seems to rely on jumpseating, deadheading, non-reving, etc....I'm surprised how many are willing to play games with the process. I'm sure it is quite the education when entering the profession. Best of luck to all of you who have to endure. Commuting in general seems to be one of the most treasured (getting to live anywhere you want for a variety of reasons) benefits and at the same time THE most mentioned evil in the airline industry. Quite the dichotomy!

It would be too much typing, but I could go on, and on, and on, and on about some of the funny stuff I've seen while relying on the JS to get back and forth to work. As well as how it's evolved (some good, some not) since 9/11. With the exception of (most) the legacies JS policies, I really miss that time.

But yeah, there are guys that really like to play games with the JS, and it can be comical to watch.

I've given it up myself a few times. I always figured it was a general rule that the guy/gal going to work always goes first regardless of on-paper priority. Had a through riding SWA FO the other day jump off so I could get to work. Class acts and I keep names. Hopefully I can repay the favor one day
