Got a job flying Air Attack for the BLM. Check into the wildland forrest fire industry... tankers are the thing you see the most, but lots of other aircraft. Good pay, but seasonal. I work for Spur Aviation, but tons of "vendors" out there.

furloughed aug, '08, and was lucky enough to find a 135 job in sept, glad i got furloughed when i did pretty sure had it been a month or two later i would still be looking. plenty of friends with more time/more quality time, than me still looking. not sure if id even go back to my 121 carrier as my QOL at my 135 op is a million times better. good luck to you guys out there still without work, it has to turn around sometime right? also any ideas as to what are competitive hours in our current aviation climate for various work?

Why is that sad? What is sad is that you were able to fly for a US passenger airline with an amount of experience that can't get you hired as a pilot anywhere else in the world!

Hmmm what I've done since furlough in February '09. Have not touched a plane. Don't plan to. Airline can pay for retraining when i come back. Unemployment for 2 months, then a data entry job since April. I've made 80% of my pay from all of '08 at the airlines in the last 5 months at this job. Doesn't have as great a view though. Also on a side note about to help out a buddy with a cleaning business one night a week. So yeah I will be a master of the custodial arts. Airline pilot to janitor in 6 months.

Furloughed Sept. '08, unemployment for 8 months while looking, flew a DA-20 for 1 hour since then for an instructor job. 9,300 hours (ish), 4 types, jet PIC, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Working at Amtrak now running trains. Friend has been trying to get me into a sim instructor job for awhile now, still not hiring. Home everyday, and pay is decent works for me.

4000TT, 2300 PIC, 1260 Jet SIC, and so on.
Furloughed in January. Still flying C-152's when I can, but no full time airline/corp jobs to be found.

Furloughed last Nov, was able to do a bit of part time CFI'ing in Dec but that's it, other than an IPC in June. So all of '09 so far I've flown a whole 1 hour, but was able to get a job offer with Cape Air just last week. So for those not flying (and still want to), don't give up hope!

Took me until March '09 (was a Nov '08 furlough) to convince myself to go back to flight instructing. Now, I just feel lucky to have a flying job period. I've put out more resumes than I can count...airlines, corporate, charter, retail, front desk at a gym, throwing bags, FBOs....and no bites except a 3rd shift security job early on in the search that I turned down (20/20 hindsight, I probably should have taken it). It just amazes me how oblivious the working public is to the hardships of finding a good job right now....both pilots and non-aviation people. I'm barely paying the bills on the CFI gig, but I'm lucky to have all instrument students at the moment & at least I'm staying current...hopefully that'll help some day.
