H.R.3371 The Actual Bill
#102
It says flight crew members have 3 years to get an ATP. I'm assuming that's for the furloughed as well. I didn't see anything on there for street applicants but I'm also assuming the 1500 is immediate for them, not that anyone is hiring below that anyways. There's an out for college academies but not completely. All it says for crew fatigue is that airlines should form bureaucracies to look into it. Also I thought it was nice that the FAA will finally be able to give us all the records they have on us under this new bill, for a small fee.
Not impressed at all. Virtually nothing on there for the airlines, it's all on the pilots. Overall a very weak bill. Get ready to have FEDs on board while doing stall recoveries at 1500feet.

Hang on a minute. I read this as no-one is required to have an ATP for the next three years. Current or prospective.

Sounds right because the part about qualifications was broken into prospective and current crew members. It doesn't say on there that you need an ATP for prospects, all it says is that it will go into effect after 3 years.

"(A) PROSPECTIVE FLIGHT CREWMEMBERS- Rules issued under paragraph (1) shall ensure that prospective flight crewmembers undergo comprehensive pre-employment screening, including an assessment of the skills, aptitudes, airmanship, and suitability of each applicant for a position as a flight crewmember in terms of functioning effectively in the air carrier's operational environment."
...hoop.

The Senate still has to vote on this, and there can still be changes to the current bill.
Hopefully the Senate sees the error that was made by adding this loophole to the bill, and closes it. Regional pilot, should not be considered entry level positions, as it is now. The only people that are not in favor of this are a bunch of University presidents and their 18-21 year olds who think it is their right to fly an CRJ-200 instead of a Shorts 360 for a couple years to gain an ATP.
Now, my wife thinks Im being a little hypocritical, but honestly... What does the flying public deserve? I think we should all be fighting for something better. Even university students, they will fly an RJ at some point, they need to see the bigger picture. We will all be better off with stricter standards...flying public, current pilots, prospective pilots.
