I see what your saying, a little 'industry common courtesy' since we live in airports and airplanes. I had a situation last week J/S on AA-80, packed flight had the cockpit J/S. I boarded late (wasn't offered pre-board to meet the crew and find a place for my bag al-la southwest/airtran, ect) when I got to the entrance of the aircraft, I promptly introduced myself to the "# 1 FA" with a smile and hello and was greeted in return without even the offer of a handshake. By the time I showed the crew my credentials (15 seconds) I proceeded to find a 'place for my bag' as the Capt. requested. As I attempted to enter the cabin to do so, the FA steeped in front of me and said no more room for overheads, I need to gate check it. Really!?! I could see many bins still open and wasn't allowed to even attempt to find a spot/rearrange bags. Then, to make a point, she even called the back where the conversation went something like this " yeah, uh-huh, ok, thanks" then promptly told me their was no room for my bag (standard 22' steel side) Thankfully the Capt realized what was going on and personally took my bag down, and retrieved it at destination so I didn't have to go to Bag calim. (I was in full uniform mind you) Thanks Capt! those crusty FA's suck! no need for that!

I jumpseat on RJ's to mexico and back almost every week and Continental and Delta do not care as long as it fits in the overhead. As far as carry on bags are concerned, if you go through crew pass you can take ANY size bag. Skis, golf clubs, if you can drag it, you can take it. Last week I took one of those giant travel pro bags that you visit europe for a month as a carry on.. just pink tagged it so I didnt have to chase it down at my location....

I had a very similar problem to the original poster in SFO, except the argument was that I had three bags (laptop, overnight bag, flight kit). Supervisor had to explain that I was exempt because I was crew. When I got to the gate the gate agent wouldn't let me on and told me that I was in violation of my passrider TOS. When I told him I was crew he said it didn't matter because I was not in uniform. Had to check my bags, and wait four hours for a flight I barely got on.

Bottom line is the employee at EWR is correct. We are often if not usually given a pass as crew on carry on rules however we can't ***** if they choose to enforce the rules. If we get a bunch of incidents where crews make a scene then you can soon expect to have the rules enforced 100 percent for all crew members. That would not be good. If they ask you to check it take it back and check it or get a legal bag.

Anybody who tries to tell us what bags we can and cannot carry through the airport is on a seriously dangerous powertrip. I do wish they would slap some of these toolbox F.O.s who choose to wear Oakleys, backpacks and I-Pods. So embarrassing.
