Bottom line is cost cost cost. Q's are the best within 400 miles as you mentioned. Airlines are going to have to find any and all ways to save a buck with the new era in aviation which is on the way.
Yes they've admitted that CAL came to them to have them put a bid out for the flying. They didn't see it feasible. I don't have any other knowledge as to where the Q's would come from. You're forgetting that they dont' have to be new. RAH has a way of finding aircraft when they need them. Two 190s apparently flew in from Australia.

Two ways to answer this if you can't pick up on the reality of what happened;

1) The 69 airplane announcement was before your time at XJT, and the pipe, therefore you missed the endless threads that went on. Containing TONS of arrogance and hubris by our coworkers along the lines of "CAL likes us too much, and we do such a good job they would NEVER do that to US". Well, it happened.

2) Some people's memories are short.

CAL would be stupid to send a Q to even any of our destinations from the Saab. The Q is needed at a greater range more that of a RJ, like OKC, TUL, hell even DFW cause the huge loads. BTR, LBB. Cant wait till they get here.
you are absolutely right and wrong. The saab doesnt need to keep flying. The dash 200-300 is a pretty solid airplane with a better maintenance record and customer satisfaction level than the saab. spare parts are getting harder to find for the saabs (americans reason for dropping them). also the 1900s operated by gulfstream have worked out well for CAL in CLE. Commutair and gulfstream are both competing for that Colgan flying that is currently being done by the Saab. With the Q coming online in houston i think they are looking at diversifying the fleet. Fitting the 1900 into the really small jobs and the smaller dash's into everywhere that doesnt justify a q400. It is my guess that the additional q's for colgan coming online will actually be a reduction in the # of airframes that colgan is currently flying for CAL.
