If there was no ATC radar within range of 447, what makes you think there would be a weather radar?

XM Worx was the best and I miss it now I'm in the 121 world. Think of Nexrad as a strategic way of looking at weather (the big picture) and onboard weather radar like Multi-scan as a tactical response to what you see or how you interpt the radar (black hole or shadows).
Your right...it takes an accident to make changes. AF447 was a crew flying into a plane killer storm, but why? Briefing, Layover computer weather, dispatch oversite and lack of rapid and reliable communication!

So damn true. Didn't know anybody still uses the weather channel for weather. It seems like if I need an update on my allergies, that's the place to go.

I also have XM via a Garmin 496 in my aircraft.
Would I use it for threading through cells ?
No...........of course, I wouldn't be doing that in my little beer can anyway.
But, it is increadbly useful, pretty accurate and updates unough to avoid most any weather and I'd love to a good layout of the "big picture" in my airline cockpit.
