AF would have only benefitted from satellite imagery. The weather they were going through was far outside of ground radar coverage.

It always takes a crash like this to advance safety.
If there was no ATC radar within range of 447, what makes you think there would be a weather radar?

At the very least, there could have been IR satellite imagery for the ITCZ via Universal or another provider.

I use a combination of StrikeFinder and XM in my bug smasher. Works well enough to pretty much avoid all of the nasty stuff.

XM Worx was the best and I miss it now I'm in the 121 world. Think of Nexrad as a strategic way of looking at weather (the big picture) and onboard weather radar like Multi-scan as a tactical response to what you see or how you interpt the radar (black hole or shadows).

Your right...it takes an accident to make changes. AF447 was a crew flying into a plane killer storm, but why? Briefing, Layover computer weather, dispatch oversite and lack of rapid and reliable communication!

Get ready for changes in Satellite communication and data links.

If only the Weather Channel would would actually show the weather and not another "Storm Stories" or an episode of "It could Happen Tommorrow"

So damn true. Didn't know anybody still uses the weather channel for weather. It seems like if I need an update on my allergies, that's the place to go.

Civilian sector is woefully behind the military and space agencies in the use of data link technology. Money being the limiting factor I suppose. Could have a pretty lengthy discourse on this topic!

I also have XM via a Garmin 496 in my aircraft.

Would I use it for threading through cells ?

No...........of course, I wouldn't be doing that in my little beer can anyway.

But, it is increadbly useful, pretty accurate and updates unough to avoid most any weather and I'd love to a good layout of the "big picture" in my airline cockpit.
