The update is there are no updates. two recall classes have gone through with the plans for more being nixed. They even cut the upgrade classes short by a few guys.

I'm wondering why the last upgrade class got cut short by a few guys. There was a rumor circulating around that the company wanted to fire all those in the last upgrade class who had previously failed an attempt at upgrading. Sadly, we know that some were, in fact, let go. My question is were ALL those that had previously failed an upgrade ride fired after failing their most recent upgrade attempt, or were there some who managed to pass on this most recent attempt?

I'm speculating that perhaps not everyone who had previously failed was fired (i.e. they managed to pass upgrade this time around). This would explain why some were cut from the next upgrade class. (The company didn't need as many captains as planned due to more people passing the upgrade ride than planned.)

Any thoughts?

It wouldn't be the first time training events were used to make staffing corrections. I imagine these folks were on the upper end of the FO pay scale, and they just got some 1st year folks off furlough.

I find it very difficult to believe that the company only upgraded them to terminate them. They are given a standard checkride just like anyone else. Essentially you are given four checkrides (two upgrades) before you are dealt with at the companies discretion. I know the APDs at PSA and they are very fair. If they feel they are given an unfair checkride they have the opportunity to have the checkride observed by a training committee member the second time at their request.

If PSA terminates anyone there is a generally a history of issues. I dont know who was terminated but from my experience it is for way more than just a busted checkride. Its not a right to be given a Captain position .... its earned..just an opinion

Everything done was done within the constraints of the contract. The union has nothing they can do due to the company following the contract to a "T". Its very sad that these pilots did not make it through on their upgrade with the current way the industry is. However the contract states clearly you will be given "x" amount of attempts. With the on goings of CAL3407 and the Captain involved the pressue is on the company, and they are given the power within the contract to deal with those who failed "at their discretion." The company decided their discretion after failures on their rides meant termination. Many of those who failed would have now failed three different rides. Two times during their first attempt, and after 6 months this last attempt.
