Embarrassing

Dude/Dudettes, plain and simple you're a professional look and act the part.
Definition of professionalism: Meticulous adherence to undeviating courtesy, honesty, and responsibility in one's dealings with customers and associates, plus a level of excellence that goes over and above the commercial considerations and legal requirements.
I think this includes ironing your shirts guys/gals.

You can't even compare the two. Eating lunch vs walking around the airport with headphones on? When we put on that uniform, we're representing our airline and our profession. (To be honest, I don't even like it when passengers walk around listening to MP3 players, but that's a whole 'nother thread!) When you have your uniform on, you are the one of the many people who a customer/passenger may approach for help or an answer to a question. It's not easy to approach somebody who's walking around with earphones on not paying attention to what's going on around them. How would you like to go to Best Buy and have the salespeople walking around with headphones on listening to their MP3 player? Do you really need to listen to music that badly? I notice the difference just wearing the hat! I know it sounds crazy, but I get more passengers interacting with me, approaching me, and asking questions in my Delta uniform than I ever did at my previous airline. Whether you want to admit it or not, we are a customer service provider. Don't forget that when you enter the airport with your uniform on.

Just stick to CFI work.

I know... you either get this stuff or you don't. It just get's annoying that some of these people are the same ones who yell about wanting to be paid like professionals, but don't know how to "act the part."

This includes not wearing an IPOD walking around the airport in uniform.

Sorry to bother you with such dribbling, at least the previous poster took the time to make his opinion heard. You must be busy ironing, and my virgin CFI ears probably couldn't understand you divine voice anyway.
Thanks for letting me know where I stand in life and what I should "stick" to.

While I totally agree with the not wearing headphones in the terminal. My experience seems to be that when I was one the phone, people came up to me even more to ask a question about where their gate was? Where is the restroom? etc. then if I was just walking to my gate with no distractions.....Yet the sign for those questions was always above their heads. Guess I looked helpful.

What about being fat and out of shape? I see a lot of those types of pilots and they certainly don't look professional. I don't see the difference between them and someone who is in shape who happens to be wearing an i-pod.
