I had a similar situation once trying to get a new handgun from my home state to Atlanta. I checked it properly but wasn't sure how to get it to my vehicle in the employee lot. I had previously had a bag stolen off of the carousel in ATL and didn't want to risk leaving it there while I went to the lot to get my vehicle. I went to the baggage office to get them to hold it for me and they said they couldn't do it. I ended up having to put it back on the carousel and hope that they got it off and took it to the holding room before it was stolen and used in a crime in college park. Luckily it worked out, but I can't say I didn't think about just taking it through the employee door and onto the bus to the lot.

How about strict liability? Does that require intent? Does a particular strict liability statute require a mens rea?

Actually you'd be surprised.

I've been camping and forgotten a couple of pocket knives in the bottom of a bag or two that have since been donated to the DHS...don't think it can't happen to you!

Not if you are a conscientious and RESPONSIBLE gun owner. You are aware at all times where your firearms are. Don't even take me any further on this one!

I don't use my rollaboard for a range bag. That will eliminate my memory lapse.

Okay...I'll agree with y'all that everyday knives and such are one thing...but thinking about what wizepilot is saying, I can't imagine being so wreckless with a firearm. But then again, you've got guys like that US Air pilot...
