How many of you are furloughed?
#61
i'll be on the streets on May 1st. Any advice?
I don't know what I'll do with myself being home all the time. I'm used to 4-5 nights away at a time.
I think I'll be able to make a little money instructing but no guarantees these days.
Finally be nice to spend some time with the Mrs. again but her job is taking her away from me for 3 months.
I don't know I'm pretty worried...how'd you guys handle it?

Add me to the list as well!
To all the guys that I was in class with(3/31/08) (ASA), and for all the guys/gals out there on the street hope all is well and everyone is hanging on during this crazy time in our great country.
I felt for the longest time that the airlines where the worst place to be during this time, but im realizing that you are not safe at any job or in any industry during these times.
Once again good luck to everyone and hopefully we will all be back flying for p-nuts once again!

Getting furloughed, especially in extraordinary times like the current economic crisis, is a scary thing, but I think you can fall back on your pilot training to get some measure of stability. For example, start a checklist right now of what you should do and what you would like to do. People cannot just turn on and off their life like a light switch. On the first day of your furlough, you will still get up in the morning, have breakfast, shower, etc.
There are lots of things you must do after a furlough. One of the first is to call your local unemployment office and open a claim. Then think of getting training in some other field. Or perhaps turn a hobby into something that pays. And don't forget your wife, children, colleagues and friends. You are still someone's husband, son, brother or nephew.
Finally, think of volunteering your time at a non-profit organization. I am not furloughed, but I volunteer a lot. It must be for selfish reasons because I always feel better after putting in a few hours at a food bank or serving food at a meal line or listening to homeless people just talk about their day.

Beer and lots of it
On a more serious note step one is to file for unemployment, next take at least a week off just to relax, spend some quality time with the mrs, knock off some things on the honey-do list.
You might as well take advantage of a little bit of time off. As for finding work there are a few options out there:
1. Flight Instruction (maybe part-time only these jobs are getting harder to come by)
2. Network and make contacts in the corporate or 135 world (they're feeling the pinch too)
3. Finding work outside of aviation if you have a degree
4. Go back to school, more education and contacts never hurts
Just my two cents

Add me to the party. Jan 6, 09. Working at an office answering phones, entering data into a computer, and greeting customers. I haven't had any replies on other jobs that i have applied for. Best of luck all, lets hope that things turnaround. All the best.

Been gone since Nov '08. Was able to do a little PT instructing in Dec, but even they couldn't afford to keep me on in the new year. Just don't stress out too much, that won't do you any good. Keep your head up and look to the future, all this BS will turn around eventually. Go buy a playstation while you can still afford it, think of it as an investment to your mental health

Furloughed 09/10/08. Now doing part-time instruction for a small club about to go under. Lease, insurance, and fuel make the fbo business even tougher these days.
Going to school with help from state dislocated worker program (MN).
Volunteering a couple nights a week, and at church.
Having other duties keeps you sane, but still does not pay the mortgage.
In talks now with the bankers, but with no job and savings gone, we will lose the house.....
Speaking in jest, you hear of these maniacs who lose a job and shoot up random, uninvolved targets? If I was a maniac, I'd know precisely where to go!!!
Good thing I'm trying to be faithful.....
